Does your employer give you hell for calling in sick?

I have good attendance, I use a sick day maybe once every 3-5 months? I had to use it today since I received my 3rd dose of Pfizer and I was unsure of how things will go so I said I cannot make it as my arm really is sore, and that anything can happen.

The staffing clerk was giving me crap saying I just don't want to come in to work, and that I should plan ahead. but I read my union book, I have 15 union days every calendar year, so why are they giving me crap? Isn't it my right? I cannot be coming to work everyday.

It is unfortunate when people call off and I get to have my workload affected. You want to call off, fine, but don’t expect me to run around like a chicken trying to pick up the slack.
I don’t mind helping, but I appreciate when my co workers give me a heads up or tell me what’s going on. **** normally runs downhill they say.

Your coworkers don't expect you to run around trying to pick up the slack, your employer does.

You called in sick on the day of because something might happen? I would have given you *** too. LOL

I disagree with you there. As someone who had side effects after both vaccines, I would do the same thing as OP and call in sick. How can you get through a 12 hour shift with fever, nausea, body aches feeling like you're going to pass out? (Not saying the OP had these symptoms, but that's what I had after both shots, and I'm expecting the same after the booster.)

I think the point being made by some of the answers is that the vaccine could have been scheduled so that potential side effects would fall on a non-working day. This is what my employer suggests and which is why I would not have called out with the reason being potential vaccine side effects. Still the ideaof an employer sending someone to your home to drag you in when you say your sick is pretty ludicris.

Sorry, but anxiety that something may happen or may go wrong doesn't seem like the best reason to call in sick.  My apologies if I'm wrong, but other than the sore arm, it doesn't appear there were other symptoms.  While it's technically no one's business why someone is calling out and people should be able to use sick days at their discretion, I can see why the person you spoke with would be frustrated.  If you really needed the day off, it probably would have been best to simply state you were ill, like others said, and leave the sore arm out of it.

I have been written up for calling in sick. Went in sick as a dog on Thanksgiving. My hospital is a for-profit corporate prostitute.

If I read correctly, OP was not having those symptoms, other than the sore arm, which can be addressed with OTC pain medication. I absolutely agree, no one should force themselves to work through the kind of symptoms you're describing, but OP said they were calling out for what *could* happen, not for what was actually happening.

You obviously didn't read my post correctly, I never said the OP had the symptoms I had. And unless you're her provider and had assessed her , you can't possibly say that she would have been better with just OTC meds. I've seen pretty bad Covid arms at my place of work.

What I'm saying is that I understand why OP got pushback for calling out for symptoms they didn't actually even have. In the OP's original post, they specifically say that they didn't have symptoms other than a sore arm. Of course it's possible to not have those symptoms relieved by OTC meds, but that is certainly a reasonable place to start and has been recommended to address that particular side effect.

Yes, my employer does and is currently giving me flack for calling out sick even with a doctor's note. I'm not buddy-buddy with the supervisor, so that could be why...
