Does your employer give you hell for calling in sick?

Updated:   Published

I have good attendance, I use a sick day maybe once every 3-5 months? I had to use it today since I received my 3rd dose of Pfizer and I was unsure of how things will go so I said I cannot make it as my arm really is sore, and that anything can happen.

The staffing clerk was giving me crap saying I just don't want to come in to work, and that I should plan ahead. but I read my union book, I have 15 union days every calendar year, so why are they giving me crap? Isn't it my right? I cannot be coming to work everyday.

Yes, my employer does and is currently giving me flack for calling out sick even with a doctor's note. I'm not buddy-buddy with the supervisor, so that could be why...

This may be state specific but where I am an employer is not required to accept a physician’s excuse for illness.

You never tell them why,and that clerk  has no right to harass you.Unfortunately a few bad apples make it worse for legit sick calls. Those Friday Monday calls made them require a doctors note if calling out on a weekend or holiday.

This is why I love CA...

We have this wonderful thingy called "Kin care." The employer is precluded legally from demanding a reason for absence...

When I call, I say "I'm calling Kincare" And If I get a newfool who doesn't know the rules, I then say "I have kin I must care for." LOL

But yeah, never give a reason...

Why doesn't the ANA spend it's time and resources (which are paid by the members} to create change like this? Stop pushing certifications as an income producer and represent the RNs. The ANA will say the revenues are down (yeh you stopped working on RN issues) so they must create other ways to support the bloat of the company!

...has the ANA ever been the primary agent of important changes? (I don't mean this as sarcasm, I honestly want to know.)

Once I believed that. I worked on several committees in my state's chapter. We shared the belief we were doing worthwhile things.....we sponsored a legislator's evening 'cocktail' party for local and state politicians where we discussed issues facing nursing (acting  in the role of lobbyists), I worked on a committee that monitored  the portrayal of nurses in TV and Movies and actually did see some changes after I wrote Gene Roddenberry (Star Trek).

But when I moved to my current state all the activities seemed 'flat'. Yes I was on a committee to address the role of nurses working with HIV+ patients in the state's prison system. But nothing seemed to come of what we did. Then It seemed all the ANA's attention turned to certification exams.
