Does A and P II require you to dissect an animal?

Published

I am considering completing pre reqs through Portage on line. Need to know if A and P II requires you to dissect an animal. I know most local colleges require you to dissect an animal that they supply by sending through the mail. Would like to know if Portage is the same before I sign up.

We had a sheep's brain, but no whole animals. The neighboring community college used cats. It really depends on the program.

I've never heard of schools personally shipping you a animal cadaver for personal dissection in your home via mail. Can you imagine? If it's an online it'll likely be a virtual lab or you'll have to go to a lab for dissection/observation. Likely it'll be a virtual online lab.

My school had us dissect a few different animal organs.

Virtual labs for my A&P classes. Back with my first degree in Biology and AP Bio in high school I dissected a fetal pig, cow eye ball, earth worm, and frog.

Ask the school- they are the only answer that counts!

We were supposed to do cat dissection, but there was a cat shortage. So they used leftover cats from the last semester and we had to identify parts during exams.

Omg! SO THAT EXPLAINS WHY MY A&P I TEACHER SAID "THANK GOD I'M NOT TEACHING A&P II LAB"!!!!!! SHE'S A CAT LADY AND I DID NOT KNOW WE HAD TO DISSECT IN A&P II AT ALL!!!!!!!!! UGH she's a really good teacher too!!!!!!

I could just see instructors from your school going around with .22 guns and big butterfly nets trying to catch local feral cats lmao

"We're out of cats, you guys! Cancel whatever plans you're doing tonight with your family! You're all under contract so that means we have to round up some cats! A&P is not a free, easy A! No, your 'babies' at home can stay alive"

We had to dissect a cat. He was missing a tooth, so I called him Gappy hahahaha

When I started A&P II, a very dear friend of mine told me "When you do the cat, get a skinny one...the fat ones are a pain." hah!

To answer the OP, it depends on the school. When I took A&P I (which was entirely an on campus class) we had a required dissection, and those that were on the fence about it were able to speak privately with the instructor. During A&P II (which I took entirely online) we had an optional dissection (a deer heart) and if we completed it, we received some extra credit points.

We did frogs and cats.

If it makes you feel any better, any animals dissected are dead. You aren't dissecting a live animal. That being said, we dissected sheep brains and kidneys.

We had to dissect human cadavers. I didn't realize until after how very rare this was and I feel lucky to have been given that opportunity even though it was upsetting to me to begin with.
