Just curious - to all the RN's, NP's, CNS's, etc. out there.....
If you had to do it all over again, would you have became a doctor instead?
Keep in mind all factors to consider: malpractice rates, med school tuition, time committment......
Happy Sunday!

How long have these staff nurses been working there? Thirty years? FP docs will start out (no matter where they are) at over $100,000/yr. and it usually goes up from there.
Travel nurses or agency nurses can make that with very little experience (2+years working experience). Staff nurses can even do quite well depending on where they live, what shifts they work, etc.

Depending on what state that you live in......................there are quite a few nurses making over $100,000 per year and with only two to four years of schooling. Big difference.....................and only $100,000 for 12 years of schooling, you must be out of your mind to want to work for that.
I think so. I don't think I like nursing very much. My job is weird, I might as well be a slave to a pager, it's better than being a handmaiden to the docs. Nurses here ARE still handmaidens. SO NOT MY STYLE!!! :chuckle:
Also, I'm starting school again this summer, going to do pre-med. So YES, I would. Shoulda done it straight out of high school, but I was an idiot and joined the army. :rotfl:
No. Does not interest me. If I had to do it all over again I would be an accountant. Or maybe a math teacher. I would love to teach algebra or trig. I would gather up all the math dummies ( a former math dummy myself) and unveil the mystery of math. I would explain to them that it was discovered- not invented. It would be like unlocking their minds to the laws of the universe and creation. Yep. Sigh.

LOL....I actually just had this conversation with a resident at work the other day.
I told her that my family always wanted me to become a doctor, but personally, I'm not interested in all the time, money and punishment that they endure to get there. I want to work, leave and enjoy my time with family and friends.
I mean, let's look at what the residents go through that I work with: 4 years of college, 4 years of medical school, 7 years of residency (for a neurosurgeon), then a fellowship. (Oh and you think nurses eat their young??? You should see what neurosurgeons do to each other!!!) Then to have the absolute HIGHEST malpractice insurance (higher than ANY other MD) and to work crazy hours and have no outside life for the rest of my working years....Nah, they can have it! And I respect them enormously for doing it. To be a doctor these days, you have to really want it and it can't be just about the money.
Actually, I've discussed this with a few attending MDs too...and they feel the same way. It's just not worth it anymore to become a doc. They named several reasons, including our legal system (it's getting really bad in PA for MDs).
Like a previous poster said....I have much more impact on a patient than a doc does and if you want to go by recent surveys, they respect us more! :)
Just my two cents.
