I know this topic has been discussed before on this site..but, I was curious for an updated response. How many of you would be willing to pay more taxes for universal healthcare? I find it egregious that the US has put a cost on maintaining/saving ones life! I traveled to Europe and the thought of them having to bring their checkbook to the hospital aroused literal laughs. It's the same notion that we'd have to whip out our debit card to firefighters before they turned the hoses on our burning homes. It's sad. I think the overall costs of UH would be beneficial...in fact, the raised taxes would still probably be lower than our rising premiums every 2 weeks! Thoughts?
True about the Hispanic family...Back to the job issue. My feeling is, if you really want a job, you can find a job. They could easily pick up a newspaper and look in the classifieds.
This kinda reminds me of my cousin who happens to be hispanic and obese. She acts like she can't even find a job. I drive around and see a bunch of help wanted signs where she lives and she complains she can't get a job and can't afford anything but she can afford a pack of cigarettes. I feel bad for her sometimes and other times I don't. She didn't have the greatest childhood. Her parents are divorced but my feeling is if you are strong enough you can change your life. She doesn't even try.
but she can afford a pack of cigarettes.
Many times I chose smokes over food. I never complained about it though. :chuckle
The whole strong thing is kinda bunk. What makes one person strong kills another.
Thing is do you really know if she tried to get a job. Maybe did and didn't get hired at any. Maybe something about her precludes getting a job like her personality or something. Maybe she is lazy...
Of course there could be other things. I could go on disability right this instance because of my BP. I have thought about it. I just am too lazy to go through all the steps. If it was an easy online application I would do it. If I chose to go on government would I be wrong? The only 2 jobs I ever did good in where because I had bosses with family members with BP. I got lucky. I did good in the Army because they had me on Adderall. Everything else I bombed. I could get the job but not keep it.
Of course once I got my BP meds all was good.
And your lungs are thanking you for it.
Bipolar people are known to participate in high risk behavior. No one noticed. Not even the stupid doctor my parents barely could pay because Tricare wouldn't pay for me to see multiple shrinks multiple times. They may have actually caught it and medicated me instead of one quack insisting for 21 years that I was ADHD.
Oh well. Got to love the HMO model. Private healthcare is so wonderful. BLEH.
My main point is no one can tell what is really going on with the people the are judging.
Eh, its not altogether bad. So far I haven't had too much trouble getting my HMO to pay for anything....yet.
I haven't but I have Kaiser and they are all about preventative care. Of course they are known to drop people who get to costly so I have a LOT of supplemental insurance.
Of course the 40 million or so that can't afford insurance might differ in opinion greatly...
Do you really want the CEO and the Board of Directors of various health insurance companies deciding between taking care of you and their shareholders?Look at what happens when "big business" runs amuck. Ken Lay, Jeff Skilling, Michael Milken, Bear Sterns, Worldcom, etc etc... i can go on. You lambast "big government" without taking a critical look at what big business has done. Don't even get me started in the mortgage/credit crisis we have now. Talk about letting business run amuck...
Oil companies are buying stock back rather than investing in exploration....
how is this different from now? the rich run things. as far as liberty goes, republicans consistently attack liberty. yet when democrats propose ideas they are accused of taking away liberties. how is this for liberty... protest zones... being told what you can and can't put in your own body... i can't get a doctor to let me off myself, even though the choice to live or die is my most precious right...
i want a government that helps. if the government saw that i was at risk in my youth for certain behaviors due to being bipolar and intervened i might not be an overweight long term smoker that is struggling to erase years of bad behavior and self-medication that would have been prevented had someone stepped in and said 'wait a minute here!' instead of expecting parents, whom are usually uninformed.
as long as they don't impede on the bill of rights who really cares what they ban? they have banned trans fats in restaurants here. is anyone complaining? nope. if they banned cigarettes i might complain but in 30 years i'll be thanking them...
shrug
so, you admit the system run by the government right now is full of holes and you want to give it more responsibility . . .
that is one of my arguments for not going the uhc route.
and your statements that this is working well in other countries is not true - as shown in the link. there are complaints. many.
it isn't just higher taxes . . it is a flawed system.

Please don't tell me you are denying their 'struggle' because they are obese.**ROLL EYES WITH DISGUST**
Just when I think maybe I came on too hard you go ahead and confirm my original thoughts...
Um, hello Stanley, those women are not 20 pounds overweight. They are morbidly obese. Big difference.

There are website with just as many people approving. The difference though is every time the English government considered switching to a different type of healthcare their was overwhelming opposition. Apparently it can't be that flawed...

Pretty hard to change 19 years of teaching and habit. Takes a whole shift in thinking. That usually comes when you leave and live on your own.
Many Hispanics do not leave the family, so she is still going to be influenced by them.
