I know this topic has been discussed before on this site..but, I was curious for an updated response. How many of you would be willing to pay more taxes for universal healthcare? I find it egregious that the US has put a cost on maintaining/saving ones life! I traveled to Europe and the thought of them having to bring their checkbook to the hospital aroused literal laughs. It's the same notion that we'd have to whip out our debit card to firefighters before they turned the hoses on our burning homes. It's sad. I think the overall costs of UH would be beneficial...in fact, the raised taxes would still probably be lower than our rising premiums every 2 weeks! Thoughts?
Wow, where do you live??? Last time I got tomatos at the farmers market near me cost 5 dollars for 3...Of course you have to factor in someone not knowing where to get healthier food, not knowing what to eat and not knowing how to cook it. Kinda like the ghettos with no grocery stores... It took me years before I became a full vegetarian without relying on the nasty fake stuff.
Kind of true. I live in Troy. The market I go to is Nino Salvaggio's. There is also larger market area in Detroit called Eastern market. The other day, I bought tomatoes on the vine, about five of them, romaine lettuce, bananas, feta cheese, apples, broccoli and onion and the most expensive thing I bought was the cheese. I only paid 14 bucks.
Why do liberals always factor in that people are too stupid to know how to do things for themselves? Do you really think these two women don't where to find healthy food or know how to cook it? Give us a break! What's with the Ghetto remark are you insinuating that these women live in a ghetto because they are hispanic?

Please tell me oh wise liberal how much compasion do you have a for a child molesterer?
Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them humanity cannot survive. - Dalai Lama
Apparently the Dalai Lama is a liberal too.
I have compassion for everyone. Just because your relationship with the world and the people in it is stunted does not mean mine is.
I have as much compassion for the criminal as the victim. When someone commits a horrendous crime not only is the victim permanently damaged and sometimes their life ended, so it is with the criminal too. A crime does not result in one victim. It results in two for the criminal is a victim of himself as well.

Nice try. :)
I'm in a good place tonight so I will forgive you for baiting... I'm the liberal here. I am not the one picking on people's social or economic classes or their weight...
By the way, when I became a vegetarian I knew nothing of healthy food. Now I caould make a mockery of what even you eat. That is not the point. The point is that healthy habits are either taught or you have to learn them. It takes time to learn them and you should be able to realize that.
Enough with the vitriol and baiting already... It gets old.
My next question is, the people in that article, don't they have a bus service where they live? I'm thinking to myself.."ok, you don't have a car, big wooo but is there a bus service?"
Maybe not, when I lived in Indiana we didn't have a bus service. Unless you lived in Indy and some of those places got a little hairy.
Public transportation here in DC is also lacking. It also pretty expensive.
Can we get off the they are fat and lazy schtick? It's old news...
Maybe they are lazy, maybe they aren't. My point is that CRNA can't make that judgment by looking at them. It is offensive to look at them and assume because they are obese that they are just fat and lazy.
I am sure he knows that already though... Like I said earlier, I hate when I question my impressions and people prove them correct.
Yeah, I agree with you. Being obese myself, I know I am not lazy. Most of the time I am working more than 40 hours a week. No one should be generalizing obese people as fat and lazy unless a certain obese person is lazy. I'm not on the fatty and lazy schtick...thank you very much. I'm only trying to analyze this family's budget in my brain...
Apparently there is no public transportation where that family lives. Do they own a bike? Just wondering. I looking at their financial sheet..100 bucks for electricity. Turn the lights off. My electricity is only 30 bucks a month for crying out loud. You don't need to have every light on in the apartment or house or condo. Turn the A/C up so it don't run so long. Turn it off at night when its cooler.
Article says no public transportation. They are living in subsidized housing so it is most likely in an area with a lot of that, which IS a ghetto.
We now jobs are in more demand and less supply because of the economy. We know people that are overly obese have a harder time getting hired. The mother is receiving social security for a reason.
Now her children should be working. Of course a 19 year old that is obese is coming out of 18 years of bad training from a parent. You can't hold that against the 19 year old. Also the prior statement of obese people having harder times getting jobs still holds.
Even if the kids should have a work ethic they grew up in a house where the women aren't working. Expecting them to be able to just jump in is ludicrous.
If I was a Social Worker I would:
1)Either get the children in Job Corps or Community college with a job.
2) Get someone to show the mother how to shop. This is a skill many people don't have despite CRNAs protests.
3)Get the children into exercising. They obviously get there size from the mother's innattention to health.
You give a man a fish he eats that day. You teach him how to fish he eats forever. Pretty simple..
I could live on their budget. I learned how to. Being poor isn't easy. They can easily get out of their situation if someone just points the way. Fortunately for them there probably are people there helping.

I don't identify myself as liberal or conservative. I have my own thoughts and beliefs. If someone doesn't have a job and is living off the government and are able to work, they better be looking for a job. I don't care if its cleaning floors or windows, do something. Yeah, its not the most meaningful and fulfilling job, but its money.
