Periodically during my 20-plus years in nursing, when I use a credit card that identifies me as a nurse, I have been told, "Oh, you're a nurse? You LOOK like a nurse."
WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?
DO YOU LOOK LIKE A NURSE?
(Sorry, folks. I KNOW I should've asked the question to all those involved what they meant by "You look like a nurse" but I was always too chicken) :trout:
Yet the question remains...
SHOWBIZRN
I started to read this forum because I was intrigued by the title...and I kept reading...the occasional funny remarks made me chuckle....which I definetly needed....I am graduating early next year and I'm already overwhelmed! So thanks for the humor, even if it wasn't intended to be humorous....it helped.
PS- People tell me I already "act" like a nurse...because I'm assertive and don't hesitate to speak my mind or stand up for others/what is right. I suppose this is a good thing...
I wonder if any of the male nurses have the same experience?
When you consider that the average age of a nurse in both Australia and the US is 45, I wonder how many of us actually fit into that stereotype? Have a look even on this page at the advertisements.
Wow, someone could write a research paper on this topic!
:yeahthat:
Most people always thought I was the doctor even when I worked as a technician. We where blue scrubs at work and even with the scrubs they sometimes confuse . However since the first thing I say on the unit when I go into to my patient is that I am there nurse that night it kinda helps.......
Sometimes a stupid coment deserves a stupid answer.
I'm a nurse working in a Long Term Care facility for over 11 years now. A few years ago a resident's son was watching me doing my med pass and he asked me,"How can you be a male nurse doing this kind of job?"
My response was,"I tried being a female nurse, but it didn't work." He never ever asked me another question after that.

I LOVE it !!! Bravo ! :yelclap:
Yeah, I think I look like a nurse. I wear very little make-up but I take care of myself and shower daily. I smell like soap. I have a very basic haircut that can easily be pulled into a pony tail and requires no styling. I have very short, unpainted fingernails. I wear very comfortable clothes and only my wedding ring which is just a small diamond that is not raised from the band at all. I have a smile that comes very easily and people always tell me I look like nothing can faze me (which isn't totally true, but at least I can act like it is!). I also have a very disconcerting eyebrow raise. :)
Disclaimer: I know lots of great nurses that are totally different from this. :)

I don't know, it could be Good, if it means we look organized, kind, competent, health conscious, energetic and well kept. Or, it could be bad, if it means we look exhausted, hostile, overworked, stressed out, and not so healthy from eating on the run and snacking to stay awake.
I have never been told I look like a nurse, but then again, I rarely go out in nursing scrubs, and most of the time I am wearing Wranglers, boots and smell like barn.
