Do You Like, Love or Dislike Your current job?

Published

Started a new job, recently. Seems like most I work with are pretty displeased with their jobs. How about you? Just curious.

Like, Love or Dislike?

Like the job. Like the people I work with. That will change if they quit, and one is talking about doing that. I have to work , I feel lucky to be working right now with so many out of work.

Specializes in Family Nurse Practitioner.
I love nursing, but I really like my job...well jobs. I work part-time in an ICU and part-time as a nursing supervisor to break up the monotony of doing either full time. I love the fact that being a nurse comes with almost limitless opportunities to work in many different areas with many different people.

Great point. I think this is a big reason why I'm so happy also. It seems like places tend to take advantage of employees when they know it is their only gig. Working both part-time makes it easier to distance myself from the bs.

The only thing I don't like about my job is my nursing manager. He is indescribable!!! He won't let you talk, he talks over you. He is ALWAYS RIGHT, no matter what,,, and even IF he did let you talk, you are wrong.

He retaliates, and people that go against him end up quitting or getting fired for something stupid because he picks on them. He'll pull their charting and write them up if they're 30 minutes late on charting their hourly I & O's.

I only get along with him because when he preaches to me, I say "yes sir, yes sir, you're right sir,,, I'll do that sir,, it won't happen again sir." etc.

SO, needless to say, I have found a new full time job and decided to just go PRN where I"m at now. When I told him, he didnt want me to go, he drilled me on where I was going and why I was leaving. I didn't tell him it was because of HIM, of course, I don't want to be retaliated against. But, when I do finally leave, I am going to write a letter to upper management. THEY KNOW what's going on with him, but they haven't gotten rid of him yet. I think because they're afraid of him. Afraid he'll sue or something. I DON'T KNOW REALLY...

But the guy has SOME good qualities... like for instance,, he did get rid of the sorry nurses that we had for years and years. The ones that didn't do their job and didn't take care of the patients. He also did give me a raise outside of my usual yearly raise. HOWEVER, he brought that up when I told him I wanted to go prn. He said "After I got you that raise, you're leaving me???" well,, yes,, i'm not LEAVING, I'm just going prn.

But I love the other aspects of my job, most of the time. Except of course the futile care that goes on sometimes in my ICU.

That's my story.

The End. lol

Easttexas,

Do not be too surprised if your PRN status is the pitts once you leave fulltime. This manager wants total comittment and control over "his" employees. Good luck in the new position.

Specializes in ICU.

You're right, I was thinking that myself... it's tuff, but oh well,, I can always get a different prn job.

Specializes in Med/Surg. for now.

i love my job, i love my manager and i love some of my co-workers and like all the rest except one that works the opposite shift of mine. rarely have to give or get report from her. i have had a rough year in my personal life with some deaths in the family and my manager and co-workers have been so understanding about needing to be with my family. have had some major changes at work, but have been fortunate enough to retain my job.

Depends on the day! :up::down:

For the most part I love my job. :heartbeat I also work in 2 different areas and it helps not to get burnt out on one or the other. I like our new NM and our atmosphere has greatly improved.:p I enjoy my coworkers and what we do.

I am also going back to school for my BSN now and then hopefully NP. :typing That's what I love :redbeathe about nursing soooo many options!:D

Specializes in ED, LTC, ICU.

I like my job..but if I could make money working from home...Id prefer to stay at home:yeah:

Specializes in psych. rehab nursing, float pool.

I too love my job 90% of the time, the other 10% of the time I dream of retirement and working very casually then. hmmmm guess I will never fully quit. I would miss it.

I liked my job until one very controlling nurse came onboard. It's amazing how one person can create such havoc on everyone else (not just me). I like the pt work but not the dominator. Guess I should start a thread on how to deal with controlling co-workers! It's draining just to think about it and takes away from what is important.

kindness is not a weakness..........

Specializes in Med surg, Critical Care, LTC.

I like portions of my job, but most of it, I simply despise. It's the bureaucratic BS, not the patients. Plus, working with many woman can be like getting a knife through my back!

I'm on "minimal duty" now due to a back injury - and I'm kind of liking all the paperwork I'm being given, some chart reviews, sometimes stuffing envelopes. I'm just amazed!! No matter where I am working each day, for QI, medical records, human resources or education - all those people get their lunch every day, promptly at noon! They even call other people on other floors and go to eat as a group of friends!! I have heard of this occurring, but since I've been a nurse, I've never actually experienced it.

Anyhoooo, I like it so much, I'm thinking that any kind of bedside nursing is not for me anymore. So, I'm going to try to find a desk nursing job. Telephone triage, working in QA, Case management etc...

Blessings
