Do you think this if fair???

I said I wasn't going to dwell on this, but I just can't help it.

I took a test yesterday. I passed it. But.... two of the questions my instructor had on the test we never lectured on nor was it even in our book. One of my classmates, asked her how are we suppose to know about that if we never covered it?

She replied with well, I guess you won't, but now you know what it is for next time. Next time, I thought. A few of my classmates did not pass due to the two questions. I could have gotten an A if these two questions weren't there. UGH! Each question was worth five points. Yes, thats ten points I could of had. Double UGH!

That's 80 instead of 70 for a classmate.

Is she going to do this with every test from now on? Its bad enough I don't like my med/surg. book. Now, I am scared.

Do you guys think this is fair? :o

I would say the question was fair, since bun/cr seems like the only reasonable answer.

Even if this wasnt something you directly covered, the answer choices were not all complicated, and did not look as if they were all correct.

What was the correct answer ? Did you find out ?

as a side note, I looked up fish oil in my drug book and it said that it may increase risk of bleeding when on antiplatelets and/or anticoagulants. Also has an additive effect when taken with anti HTNs.

yup, this is a "thinking" question......since you cant do "c" then "d" is also out.....and there doesnt appear to be a relationship to "a", that leaves "b".......good luck

My instructors wouldn't do that. In fact, we are free to speak to anyone of them regarding what we think is an unfair exam question. They have actually thrown out a question of two because of unfairness (we had never gone over it, incorrect answer in answer key etc)

I thought B immediately, for the reasons listed above. We've never covered fish oil either, but B is the only answer that makes sense - you'd want to have a pretty clear indication to limit someone's fluid or nutritional intake, and since fish oil is available at GNC and all those places, and used pretty commonly, I think they might have told us about it in pharm if there were any serious lifestyle modifications needed when taking it.

I would have guessed BUN/Creatinine also -

same here

I would have guessed B also... just from personal experience... I have IGA Nephropathy and was put on 12 (YES 12) fish oil capsules per day for about a year... (my doc retired and new doc said no more... thank the Lord) But because of my kindey issues... BUN and creatine levels are always checked.. it just made sense to me.

What did you guess?? Did you ever find out the right answer???

i think that many of you are not taking credit for you powers of deduction....i dont think you are ALL guessing....!

Since the quesiton was about fish oil did you check your book for omega-3 or omega-6. That's the only thing I can think of for the instructors response of "dig" for the answer because it might not address it as fish oil because of the availability in capsule/tablet form.

If you read enough posts on allnurses, you will find that NS isn't always fair. Do the best you can to get yourself through school, pass your NCLEX, then start working. Those who miss passing by only two questions will need to work harder to keep their scores up by studying what has been covered. I think we've all been there.

Best wishes!!

wdwpixie hits the nail on the head. If you think this is unfair, wait until you are unfairly criticized for your clinical performance and not given specifics (because they don't exist). There is no way to combat a failing grade in clinical if your instructor decides you aren't going to make it. Hope that does not happen to you or any of your classmates.

Well, my answer was like most of your answer. I assumed it was bun and creat, since we were covering fluids and electrolytes. That answer, I know, is wrong. I got it wrong. No, we never did found out what the real answer was. A few of my classmates did ask. She just told us to dig. Like most of you, I did research it and dug. But I don't know, if what I am digging for is in the right area. I guess, I will never know which answer is correct, she won't tell us, for now anyway.

I have heard through anunts and older sister about instructors like this. The advice they gave me was.... be quiet and do your work!

Therefore, I am staying quiet and doing my work. Studying real hard, keeping my nose in the books. Thanks to everyone!

God help me, please! Keep me in your prayers!

I forgot to add....

After the exam, my classmates and I got together and talked about that question, I think most of us answered bun and creat. I remember the teacher telling us in class, that no one got questions 9 which was the fish oil question, correct.

In my own admission, the only reason I chose bun/creat was because we were studying fluids and lytes that was my only rationale for chosing that answer. You guys had more of a realistic rationale for chosing that answer than me. All I can say, is I am glad that question was at the end of the test and not the beginning. Otherwise, I would blanked out and failed the whole exam.

Thanks, again for listening.
