Do you think this if fair???

Published

I said I wasn't going to dwell on this, but I just can't help it.

I took a test yesterday. I passed it. But.... two of the questions my instructor had on the test we never lectured on nor was it even in our book. One of my classmates, asked her how are we suppose to know about that if we never covered it?

She replied with well, I guess you won't, but now you know what it is for next time. Next time, I thought. A few of my classmates did not pass due to the two questions. I could have gotten an A if these two questions weren't there. UGH! Each question was worth five points. Yes, thats ten points I could of had. Double UGH!

That's 80 instead of 70 for a classmate.

Is she going to do this with every test from now on? Its bad enough I don't like my med/surg. book. Now, I am scared.

Do you guys think this is fair? :o

actually, fish oil is good for normalizing BUN/creat in renal impairment, that is what i found in research.....is it with in our scope of practice to be making this suggestion (restricting green vegetables) without some evidence?

^^^^^ I agree and I found this article that supports your answer.

Hypervitimanosis A following long-term use of high dose fish oil supplements.

http://www.chestjournal.org/cgi/reprint/97/5/1260.pdf

Also if you read the entire article please note that it says the patient's BUN/Creatinine levels were normal so that is definitely not the answer.

It's hard to say the question is "unfair" if I can answer it correctly using just my common sense and general knowledge without have even set foot in my first nursing class.

This teacher still sounds like a chump, though.

What a day. I guess a few of my classmates had a talk with our instructor after class. I don't know exactly what happened, but I heard it wasn't pretty.

This is one of those things that you know is wrong, and some people can walk away, and deal with it. Others, well others... are determined to do the right thing.

Me? I am scared to even make a peep. I can tell this is going to get ugly. Teachers always win. Although, I do understand the principle of my fellow classmates debates.

Frankly, I don't see anything good coming from this one. When we turned in our 20 medication sheet this morning, she stated we had to do it over because we did not put the history of the medication and we did not put it in a folder. We just stapled the sheets together.

Of course, we told her she did not inform us of that yesterday. But, she insisted that she did. Like a mother reprimanding her child, she than stated, "we don't listen." Enough said, we now have to do our 20 medication sheet over again.

Like I said earlier, 16 more weeks, and I am out of here. I feel good, that I at least did the research on my own and found out what fish oil is all about.

I don't need the hassle or mental exhaustion that my classmates are going to cause.

Am I wrong????? What will my classmates resolve? My instructor has a bad reputation, we knew that from the beginning. They can't change her.

Some may call me a coward, but I just want to focus on graduating.

Even though my instructor is soooooo wrong!

Thanks everyone. I am studying Neuro. Wish me luck on this one!

Thanks, again.

You're not wrong and you're not a coward. You're simply recognizing that you're dealing with an irrational person who happens to be in a position of power. The best thing you can do is just what you are.

All that matters is that you get through this and graduate.

Nothing good will come out of challenging this person, as you've already seen. Only a fool will continue to repeat the same actions while expecting a different result.

Good for you for stepping aside.

Out of my own curiousity I asked my instructor the question and gave her the answers and she said limit the dark green vegetables because of possible vitamin toxicity. She then asked me why and I told her what happened. She said the instructor should have thrown out the two questions and recalculated the tests because that wasn't fair to any of you. In you last post it's seems you're over it but I just wanted to let you know that all instructors are not like this. At least this happened at the end of your program so you don't have to put up with it much longer. I feel it would be worse if it would have happened in the beginning.

nope, neither green leafy vegetables or fish oil are appreciable sources of vitamin A. the veggies are high in carotene, and the fish oil hasnt much A, it is fish LIVER oil that is high in Vit. A.....

My first thought was the veggies but I would need to make assumptions about the patient.

I would have to assume the patient is taking the fish oil to help thin the blood. So if he eats the dark green leafy veggies he could be counteracting the fish oil.

Is it possible? Yes. If there wasn't a scenario given that tells you something about the patient then the question is a stretch.

The med sheet thing is also suspicious. How could EVERYONE get that wrong?

To me, if 1/4 the class fails, that's life. If everyone fails, that's a poor teacher.

I wonder if she realizes that.

I suggest you tape record all of her classes and keep them for evidence of what she did/did not say.

If it makes any of you feel better, our instructors do not throw out questions just because the material wasn't covered or because the majority of students missed it. I learned this the hard way. At first I would focus on what was covered in lecture and it's related text in the chapter. Now, I know that anything in our text book is fair game, including correlated material that may be in other text books we have. If the information is not word for word in the text then it is more than likely a question that requires critical thinking based on the information that is word for word in the text or correlated text. A previous poster mentioned that although it will prevent A's it won't prevent passing and I strongly agree--based on how my school is.

To the OP: I don't know how your school or other's schools operate but I think it may give you a peace of mind to talk to your instructor--if anything you could acquire some guidance for future occurances. But most importantly, don't let it get you too frustrated, there will be many moments of "unfair" that you will encounter on this journey. Stay strong, maintain focus, keep your head up and continue to put 110% into your efforts and you will overcome the struggles.

Good luck and please don't let this aggravation keep you from believing!

I finally went to bed after class today. I was up all night looking up the histories of these drugs. No Sleep, went directly to the hospital. Then, at clinical, our clincal instructor gave us a pop-up quiz that she had to pick up from our theory instructor early this am. Guess what the pop-up quiz was on??????????

The 20 medications we had to look up!!!!!! How many of us passed that one??????

Two, yes two by 1/2 a point. She is sooooooo wrong. Was I one of them??? No!!!

I couldn't even remember my name.... I never slept! We did not take care of patients today. Instead, we were given a lecture by our clinical instructor about what to do as a nursing student. Like, how much we need to dig, we are adult learners, stayin away from people who like to cause trouble because you will than be labeled like them, etc. etc. etc.

We can expect pop quizzes from now on in the clinical area not just in class.

The students who spoke with our instructors yesterday, is now going to the Director of Nursing. I guess, our instructor screamed and slammed the door on them. Yipes!!

I hope you guys don't mind me venting here. You guys are the only ones that can help relax me. I can't listen to my classmates based on their confusion and or anger.

Thank you for just being there. God Bless you, ALL!!!!!

I feel so much better that I took a nap.

I LOVE NAPS!!!:specs:

THANK YOU!

ouch, this has been blown out of proportion. Im glad you stayed out of it.

I do understand that sometimes students dont approach instructors in the right way, they go up to the instructors really angry and confontrational, and make the instructors all defensive. Then, ofcourse nothing is accomplished.

But its probably more upsetting to see an instructor that does not support his/her students. Just because some in the class may have approached her the wrong way, doesnt mean she gets to take it out on every student in the class.

An ideal instructor in my opinion would have taken the two questions as a learning experience. She should have told the students, give me your reasons for why you think your answer is correct, and ill let you know where you are going wrong. This would have given them a more indepth understanding of the topic.

I hope this blows over smoothly, without any unnecessary damage, and vent away. We are here to support you.
