I said I wasn't going to dwell on this, but I just can't help it.
I took a test yesterday. I passed it. But.... two of the questions my instructor had on the test we never lectured on nor was it even in our book. One of my classmates, asked her how are we suppose to know about that if we never covered it?
She replied with well, I guess you won't, but now you know what it is for next time. Next time, I thought. A few of my classmates did not pass due to the two questions. I could have gotten an A if these two questions weren't there. UGH! Each question was worth five points. Yes, thats ten points I could of had. Double UGH!
That's 80 instead of 70 for a classmate.
Is she going to do this with every test from now on? Its bad enough I don't like my med/surg. book. Now, I am scared.
Do you guys think this is fair?
It came out of left field and I got it incorrect. I got an 84 on my final, instead of an 85, which I needed to get an A in the class. So, I was mad.----Abby you only have to get a 85 to get an A??! Wow! We have to get a 92 or >!! What school do you got to & can I go too?!!! LOL
I think she means she needed an 85 to keep her A AVERAGE, not to get an A.
As of today, out of 34 students we now only have 7 students left. First thing this morning, our instructor told us that no one has passed the last four tests. "I would think about going down and withdrawing from my class, if I were you guys." Is exactly what she said. So a few got up and left to withdraw. As far as the new Dean assigned to us. She won't see us without an appointment. According to her secretary, she is in a meeting all week. How appropriate. Yes, the papers where filed to the EEO. Also, the Illinois Community College Board were informed about the instructor not showing up for clinicals. I guess there are some rules about that. The chancellor of the program will not return our calls. We have been trying to contact her for almost a week via e mail and phone.
Do you think they would get the message if 34 students complained about the same thing, that there is truly an issue here? Why we have not seen our past four exams. I am so tired of all this. The school administrators do not care that our instrutor: we have not seen our past four exam nor provide us with rationales from the first two or three exams we did take. They also don't care that she told me that I am too white looking to be puerto rican so I must be mexican in front of my classmates. That whites have more opportunity than her people. That it is up to her to decides who makes it as a nurse not anyone else. Abuse of power. But not to realize that out of 34 students only 7 are left? WOW. What do they need to get the hint?
Something is wrong. Obviously they don't care. The chancellor is supporting our instructor instead of us. My classmates and I have exemplary evaluations all throughout the two years.
I am concern that some of you posted that this is part of the "norm"
that this is what nursing school is all about.
Are you saying that deception is okay? Because previous students allowed it, is the reason why it continues to go on. What about families and their children? I was going to take the coward way until my instructor decided to continue on with the game. Until she threatened us.
I guess some of you who posted that this is a norm don't realize nor care about the children that may be impacted due the malicious agendas of this instructor and the school. I am working hard to educate myself so that my family can have a better life. So, I may be able to provide food, shelter, and education.
The average age group of my classmates are 30"s. We are adults with children. Most of us are single moms. Living paycheck to paycheck. We are all very close.
Therfore, to advocate such behaviors is uncalled for.
I do, however, wanted to thank everyone who has been supportive and understanding of our situation.
Thanks.
I think this is far from the norm. Your situation has crossed the boundaries of what is acceptable behavior on many different levels. While I have read here time and again about tough instructors and ones that aren't kind or helpful this has gone way beyond that.
I can't believe only 7 are left. All of you should keep complaining...in writing and by certified mail so you can track it. Also, all of you should log your calls and keep a copy of all emails sent. Are you still taping her?!
The Chancellor is clearly protecting the instructor. Probably doesn't care about all the people dropping as chances are it's too late for them to get a refund. The lawyer could really prevail here even though that will take time. Hang in there.
No this isn't the norm and you're right this is messing with peoples lives. You all are almost done and the school is letting this instructor get away with these things. The instructor's probably been getting away with this for a while and it has to stop. Are there any students from previous classes that you or anyone else knows that had her and can verufy this is how she was with them. Something that says it's not just this group of people. The school doesn't care because they're bottom line is the money and they've already been paid by all of you for the class. Have you tried contacting the news stations or the paper about this?
Your last post said that there was a group of students that she was hanging out with. How are they doing in this class?
I could be wrong, but the people posting saying it's no big deal are people who (I think) have not read the entire thread to see how it's escalated.
If it were me, you'd be darn tootin' I'd be working on filing a class action lawsuit right now. I hate to say it, but it looks like there'll be very little chance of this getting resolved before the end of school. My advice now would be to explore other avenues, and try your hardest to get your money back. Either that or tie them up in such expensive litigation for so long that they thought twice the next time this instructor was up for contract renewal.
I would *really* like to know the name of this school, if you could PM it to me. I'd like to check their NCLEX numbers. If there's only a small number of people from the school taking the NCLEX from the past few years, it'll be an obvious indication that many of the students failed out.
This maybe my last post on this thread, at least. I too had to withdraw.
We finally received our grade scores from the past four exams. Our instructor didn't even grade the scantrons. She just wrote in black ink "D" on every scantron test. How is it that our instructor expect us to learn anything when we cannot go over the quiz we take?
Now, out of 34 nursing students- NONE are left. We all withdrew from the program. Does that say anything to the school chancellor. NOPE!
The three classmates who was caught with the instructor at the libray withdrew from the class also. We showed them the picture. :)
I forgot to edit that the chancellor's real title is Vice Chancellor or Chief Executive Director. She tells us its both.
We, as a class, decided we would study on our own. Until, maybe, the chancellor would come up with something to remedy the situation.
I doubt it. The chancellor e mailed one of my classmates back. She stated that our situation in NOT a life and death situation. "A life and death situation is when she (chancellor) allows unsafe nurses to practice." She also said that we as nurses need to understand that we will encounter co-workers and doctors who we won't like and that we just can't go around writing them up or threatening to take them to court. In the e mail the chancellor also advised that we grow up and act professional. And getting an attorney will not deter her from letting below standard nurses graduate from her program. NICE Huh?
She considers us below standards? Why? We were the ones asking our instructor to teach? It was the instructor who made the mexican and white slurrs. It was her that shredded our exams and told the nursing tutor not to help us.
Also, since we withdrew from the course, not the program. We are not allowed to use the computer lab and lab itself. We are not allowed to be in the nursing department, unless we register the next & last subterm course. Which is Nursing Leadership.
The chancellor also stated in her e mail that we all will be getting a letter in the mail. It will state that seating is not guranteed for repeaters of the med/surg course for the fall of this year.
In other words, we are S.O.L.
My classmates are crying and depressed, like me. Our nursing instructor, and the chancellor has made this whole nursing experience a very traumatic experience. Afterall of the comments, sabbatoges, and intimidations. I don't want to go back to this or maybe any other colleges.
The instructors who I admired from the past, ignored us. Even when they knew and a few have admitted, we were in the right, and their colleague is in the wrong. They did nothing. I am sick and tired of all of their lies (our instructor and esp. the chancellor) about us. It was NOT us. A few classmates did retain an attorney. I cannot afford one.
I feel hopeless, helpless, and incompetent. My confidence is gone. I feel so insignificant as a person. Worthless.
I will try to help others, somehow. Whether be in nursing or just being me.
When I find, me.
Thanks to everyone. I wish ALL of you the BEST of LUCK. GOD BLESS
I'm truly sorry. I'm glad you all left as a group. When everyone walks out it looks really bad for the school and the instructor. Any lay person would know that there is no way that everyone in one nursing class would fail. Awful that they let this happen. They will pay in the end.
Pass on all emails to the attorney at once as well as all letters any of you receive. Keep a copy of all your tests, reports, etc. for this class as well. Make sure anyone you know going into the program knows not to take this instructor so they don't suffer the same fate.
Is Excelsior accepted by your BON?! I believe they take people that are 50% through their program and as you are almost done that could be a nice compromise for all of you. I wouldn't go back to this school even if they offered you a seat in the fall. They aren't on your side. Hugs.
I'm speechless, absolutely speechless that this could happen to you all.
Please do as others have suggested and keep copies of everything.
Take some time to grieve it all.
I have a feeling that you'll come back stronger and succeed in a different program. :icon_hug:
Meantime, please keep us updated on how you're doing, ok?
I'm sorry but I don't feel like you have fought for this. You walked with your head down and then gave up.
If there are copies and tapes then going to the media would be a great thing.
You can also go to your State Board of Nursing.
This issues you have described go way beyond a typical grievance and I'm sure they would look at it. This isn't about a student or just a teacher...it is about the school.
What has the attorney done besides take money?
If you aren't going to the outside agencies you have given up.
I might sound harsh but you haven't done anything. You have not put up a fight.
I am sorry that this happened but I can't feel sorry for you when you haven't fought.
I wish you the best but honestly in nursing you need a backbone. Having a backbone doesn't meant accepting what happened but fighting for yourself.
It's not too late to fight it and make it right.
I am so sorry. Angie's so right on about letting yourself grieve. An injustice has been done against you; you're at the mercy of a system which has none to offer you.
Remember, though, this is them, not you. Grieve but try not to let it be inside of you. Don't give that psycho the power to destroy you. She can and has taken something very valuable away from you but she hasn't taken you from you. You will find yourself; you're still there and we can see it in your writing.
I want you to know that there are programs that are supportive and encouraging. They're not all whacked out as is the one that you described.
I don't know that I would have withdrawn, but I am also stubborn (some say hard-headed).
What has come of the grievance complaint? Was it filed? Those are the things I would be following up on. Then, while taking some time for internal evaluation and grieving, look at the other programs local and internet based, weigh your options and start moving forward.
You may look into whether you are able to test for LPN/LVN with the amount of RN course work that you have completed.
I am sorry for this interuption to your desired path just remember, "What does not kill me only makes me stronger" (Friedrich Nietzsche).
Fair winds to you.

Did the 22 people just quit within the last week or two?! If yes, that is a big sign that something is wrong. I can see a few quitting or failing out, but not 22 of 34. Yikes!!
If no one passed the latest tests either I would march right back into the Dean who has taken over the case. If a whole class is failing there is a problem. If the 3 lunching with her are the only ones that did pass that is an even bigger problem.
Did you wrote to the EEO yet?! All of you should TODAY.
