I said I wasn't going to dwell on this, but I just can't help it.
I took a test yesterday. I passed it. But.... two of the questions my instructor had on the test we never lectured on nor was it even in our book. One of my classmates, asked her how are we suppose to know about that if we never covered it?
She replied with well, I guess you won't, but now you know what it is for next time. Next time, I thought. A few of my classmates did not pass due to the two questions. I could have gotten an A if these two questions weren't there. UGH! Each question was worth five points. Yes, thats ten points I could of had. Double UGH!
That's 80 instead of 70 for a classmate.
Is she going to do this with every test from now on? Its bad enough I don't like my med/surg. book. Now, I am scared.
Do you guys think this is fair?
Well, I went from dwelling on a exam.... to this. Clinicals this morning, we waited for our instructor. We waited, and waited, and waited. Finally, a classmate calls the school to let them know that we don't know where our clinical instructor is at. That she was not at the hospital. The Director told us we could not leave the hospital that we had to put in the full clinical hours.
On that note, the nurses were getting mad. I don't blame them. We were on their unit, and we were not allowed to take care of any patients, without our instructor.
One of the nurses on the unit asked us if the rumors were true. Are we really suiing the school etc... A classmate responded with a yes, and told the nurse what the school is putting us through. The nurse told us that instructors stick together no matter what. She was horrified to hear what we were going through.
The nurse manager finally told us to go home. We were in the way. So, we left. Three hours we were there with no clinical instructor. Needless to say, several classmates went back to school and dropped out. They have had it with the school.
The attorney for my classmates are making sure that we (regardless of who paid or not) cross our T's and dot our i's. Every step, thus far, is being cautiously taken. Thanks for the concern.
We have not yet received our grades from last weeks, this weeks, and this weeks' titration exam. Go figure.
If I stay, I would have to repeat this class in the fall. I needed the money.
But, I will not repeat this class if she is still teaching it. That is why, I was searching for other programs.
Does anyone know of any nursing program that I may be to repeat just med/surg??? I don't need to repeat second year over.
Desperately trying to find answers.
Please talk to a counselor at Excelsior. They may accept your nursing courses. Even if they don't (which I doubt), the program is not impossible and is a viable alternative to waiting and waiting and searching for a program when all they want to do is hear how much of your "story" you are willing to divulge. At least just talk to them. You might be surprised.
Thanks. I will look into that. Has anyone every heard of CALE organization? I am just covering my basis right now. Nearly, half of my classmates have withdrawn from the course. You would think that Administration should step to the plate. What a waste of money. Just this class alone cost us over $1000.00. Why is it so difficult to do the right thing?
Caliotter, did you graduate from Excelsior? I don't think Illinois accepts them. ????
Remember this if you can't get into another program. Excelsior College will accept your nursing classes after evaluating your transcripts. You are eligible to apply since you have completed more than 50% of a nursing program. So, there is an opportunity to finish nursing school. This is one of the best reasons for a program like Excelsior. Best wishes to you and your peers.
Just to pick your brain...what is 1/2 the nursing program?! All the pre-reqs and 1/2 the nursing courses?! Do you have to be a LPN first or just a regular ole AD nursing student?! Do they accept Excelsior in NJ?! Sorry for all the questions. You seem to know a lot about them and to really like them. TY. :redpinkhe
Interesting that word has already gotten to the hospital. Doesn't speak well of the instructor that her students are suing. It's also interesting that she didn't show up today. I'm hoping that means she's on her way out. One can only pray.
I'm proud of you for not quitting. Hang in there. You paid your money and might as well see it through. I still feel like you are going to pass and graduate. Just women's intuition, but often it's right on. wink

It is best to talk to someone directly at Excelsior and check out what is on their website. I'm a student with them, have not finished. I'm fairly certain that "half of the nursing program" would be half of the NURSING classes, including clinicals. I do know that each person's transcripts and credits are evaluated individually. So, different people will come out with what might be different results. Half of an RN program is one way. Being an LPN is another way. There are other job categories that are acceptable, like doctor. Their criteria has changed over the years, becoming more stringent. That's why an individual needs to read their info on the website and ask questions of the counselors. You can find out from the NJ BRN if they are accepted there. Many states have placed restrictions or eliminated this program as being acceptable in their state. I like Excelsior because it is a second chance for those who don't have other avenues to get a nursing education. Also, for the most part, they are straight up. No school politics and favoritism.
Its not fair, but also not uncommon. In my school they review the scantron after the test to see if the information was covered if enough people missed it. About half of the instuctors will own up if they forgot to cover something, about half will swear they covered it no matter what.
In my school we learned quickly, don't complain, they will make your life hell. Keep your head down, and make it to the end. Thats all that counts sometimes. I think all schools are going to have their good and bad moments. For me, is the fight on anyone thing, worth the risk? Maybe the cowards way out, but I keep quiet and study. lol
It came out of left field and I got it incorrect. I got an 84 on my final, instead of an 85, which I needed to get an A in the class. So, I was mad.----Abby you only have to get a 85 to get an A??! Wow! We have to get a 92 or >!! What school do you got to & can I go too?!!! LOL
By the time fourth semester gets here...There are FOUR right answers on the tests. Your job? Figure out which one the instructor thinks is correct. Welcome to nursing school. They disguise it under the term "critical thinking." But I have seen them makes tests hard and almost unpassable on purpose. Go figure.
Took some time to re evaluate everything. Administration does not seem to want to help us with the situation. The tape recorder of the racial comments went to the attorney. Out of 34 students we only have 12 left. Yes, 12 classmates are left. We still have not seen four of our exams that we took. According to our instructor no one in the class passed any of them. On that note.
Friday, I went to the school library to return a pharmacology book. I thought I would stay a while to see if there were any other nursing books that I may borrow. I walked pass by a study room. Guess who I see????
Three of my classmates with our instructor. They were laughing, and eating with her. After a minor adjustment with my brain.... I realized my instructor was tutoring them. WHAT!!!
I took a picture of them with my camera phone. Called a few of our classmates. Needless to say, it got ugly. We all agreed that we are not going to say anything to the three classmates until tomorrow. We want to hear what they have to say.
How can our instructor play favorites like that? This is all so wrong!!!

I am still on my "follow the proper grievance procedures" bandwagon, at this point if/when the proper channels have been followed and formally rejected by the EEO/grievance committee then go to the media, BON, etc. As I have said repeatedly, you must follow the redress procedures correctly before the school can be found liable and going outside of the school only hurts your case further. You have a good case and it would be a headline grabber, but if you haven't followed the established policy you all are the ones that are left looking foolish.
As for the Dean being removed from the grievance, this is not all that uncommon as she is in the Chain of Command for all Nursing matters. Whereas Dean from another Major is thought to be neutral.
