Do you think this if fair???

Published

I said I wasn't going to dwell on this, but I just can't help it.

I took a test yesterday. I passed it. But.... two of the questions my instructor had on the test we never lectured on nor was it even in our book. One of my classmates, asked her how are we suppose to know about that if we never covered it?

She replied with well, I guess you won't, but now you know what it is for next time. Next time, I thought. A few of my classmates did not pass due to the two questions. I could have gotten an A if these two questions weren't there. UGH! Each question was worth five points. Yes, thats ten points I could of had. Double UGH!

That's 80 instead of 70 for a classmate.

Is she going to do this with every test from now on? Its bad enough I don't like my med/surg. book. Now, I am scared.

Do you guys think this is fair? :o

OP- I am appalled at what has been going on at your school and feel for what you are going through! I was telling my husband your story and he came up with an idea. He said someone should try to videotape this behavior and post on youtube. Your instructor would be exposed for all to see her aberrant behavior, it would generate press and the submission would be anonymous.

Good Luck and keep us posted!

Hello, everyone. I have been studying my butt off with this titration math. I went to Barnes & Noble stayed there for several hours. Thank goodness they sell coffee. I really needed it. I went on line, also.

A few great tips from someone here - thanks daytonite!

I wish I had not gone to school today. Where should I start? I guess last friday. The Dean of the school asked for the master test, again. The instructor said she did not have them, only the scantron. Which is blank. The nursing tutor/nurse coordinator told the dean that she had a copy of the test and that she has all copies of the previous tests. The instructors must give a copy of all tests given to students to the tutor. She gave the dean all of them. Not only that, but that all of the tests that were given to us are all from the Lewis test bank. The dean came on her off day, saturday. She compared all the tests we have take to the test bank exams. She than used the test bank answers compared it to our answers and our professors master scantron. I was horrified when the dean told us that 98% of my classmates, according to the test bank question/answer and what we answered, would of passed all exam that our instructor have given to us from day one.

She told the President of the school and she too was horrified. Both the president and the dean notified the chancellor. The chancellor was horrified. Not with our instructor, but with the dean and the nursing tutor. We have an exam tomorrow, plus titration, and 12 page patient teaching. The president told us that the chancellor wants to meet with tomorrow after class to talk about "becoming adults and taking responsibilites." The nursing tutor, the Dean, and now the president are fuming over the chancellor. To top all of that, I went to the cafeteria and I saw one of my utmost favorite nursing instructor. She was the bomb. If I ever wanted to become an instructor I wanted to be like her. She was strict but it was constructive. Anyway, I said hello to her. She gave me a dirty look, and asked me what am I doing hanging out with the troublemakers. I told her what the professor is doing. She said that she had heard that we got a lawyer. I told her I didn't. She said "good maybel you'll pass the class 'cause I guarantee the ones with the attorney won't." "They'll broke with no degree." I told her she didn't understand what was going on. She just said, I know what professor... told me and you guys need to study harder." That was a big blow. I admired this lady so much. My grandparents are giving me such a hard time about this. They keep telling me just study, don't get involved. They keep asking me why do you worry about everybody else. Worry about myself. Teachers have the right to do what they want and say what they want.

I just cried all day. I can't win for nothing. I used to be the happy one. I can tell I am not going to be the same person when I leave from this school. I am trying to make sense of this all.

I am beginning to wonder is it really me? Am I not studying hard enough? Am I a bad person? Than I remember what the dean discovered today with our exams. I think thats proof that rigged that test. I am not understanding, with the nursing shortage out there, that this school is not helping us with our education. Lately, I haven't had much appetite and sleep. I see other teachers pointing fingers at us. Even the clerks and other students know about what is going on. We are labeled as troublemakers. I am thinking about withdrawing and signing up at another school. I don't if it will be nursing. Its been my passion since I was fourteen. I volunteered at nursing homes, I love geriatrics. They teach me so much about life. Maybe, this is not for me anymore. I have lost my sense of humor. I have lost me.

If I were you I would follow my own idea and look into transferring to another program. Riding this one out will wear on your nerves and your morale. It is not worth it if you can find a way out. Good luck. Remember you have a lot of support here.

The Chancellor wants to try and sweep this under the rug just like they have in the past. Hold your head high as you have done nothing wrong. The instructor is abusive, dishonest, and racist. Trying to get her held accountable is honorable. Shameful that students are being threatened with failing the semester for speaking up. It really is deplorable.

The Chancellor is trying to bully all of you and make you think it's your fault. It's not. She's banking on people feeling like you now do...insecure, stressed out, sad, alone, etc. It's deceptive and meant to scare you. It's also meant to try and get all of you to back down. I wouldn't. To do so would mean allowing the instructor and the school off the hook once again. Someone has to take a stand and you are one of those trying to right a wrong.

The Chancellor will try and prey on anyone she sees as weak so be sure to hold your ground. You should be direct and honest about the instructor's comments, fixing of tests, etc. in a respectful manner. All the students should band together and stay strong.

From what I recall you only have this semester left and then you graduate. Is that correct?! If yes, I would try and stick it out and see how things go. For some reason I feel like you might be one of the ones to eek out a passing grade here. That's just my gut. Hang in there. Keep us posted. We are all praying for you.

Well, thanks for everyone's advice. Unfortunately, I don't see this crisis decreasing any time soon. Our chancellor came in after our exam. She talked to us about high standards. One classmates made mention about our exams are passing and not failing. Her response? "Professor.... can use any test bank exams and the answers do not have to be the same as the test bank." One student than asked, "well, why can't she explain her rationale for the questions." Chancellor's response, "It is up to you guys as adults to find the rationale." "Your grades are the same as it was, no grades will be changed." "If you are failing, and most of you are, you may need to drop out of the class." "If you drop out of the class, that does not gurantee that your seat is allocated for the next med/surg. class."

The chancellor also said that Dean.... will not be handling our grievances any longer that a different dean is assigned to our case.

We couldn't even talk to the Dean today. The secretaries in the office, became body guards. I am left with so many unanswered questions. Why couldn't they just do the right thing??? Why couldn't the other instructors stand up for us??? Is it difficult to do right??? WHY?

I called a few nursing programs. Most will not accept students until the fall or spring. A few classmates also dropped out of class today. Others went to see their attorney. Me? I went from being estatic that I am graduating to not. I am not the same.

I do, however, want to thank all of you. To all, who cared so much.

I too, will be dropping out. I will wait and hopefully transfer to another school. Wish me luck. I wish every student here success and GOD BLESS!

The Chancellor is an unethical person. Shame on her. The poor Dean can't even help anymore and was taken off the case because she knew the Dean was on the side of the students and rightfully so.

I'm proud that people questioned the Chancellor. I'm sure that was hard to do. They will continue to put the blame on all of you. I would make an anonymous call to the local papers and tell them there is a tape. You can bet it will make the news as it should.

Keep your chin up and keep trying. Don't let these terrible people keep you from fulfilling your dream. Also, did you send a letter to the EEO of the school as advused above?! All of you should. It needs to be in writing and in the hands of people capable of handling this situation.

I would continue to file grievances with the new Dean assigned to the case. If they won't let you in to see them then call and send emails. They can only ignore you for as long as all of you allow it. I really feel for the classes after you. I would tell everyone you know entering the school not to take a class with this instructor.

Sorry, but now it's time to go outside the school for help. Following the rules about grievances and whatnot has gotten you nowhere. I would NOT give up one semester from graduating because of the unethical crap you are having to deal with. If you could find your answers on your own you wouldn't need to have instructors, now would you? That's the lamest cop-out I've ever heard. You paid your tuition, you paid to be taught, now you have to be TAUGHT. In my opinion, this would be outright fraud. You are not getting what you paid for.

I don't understand this whole situation. The Dean got the tests that this instructor had destroyed so no one could see what she was doing and found out that you all would have passed. The the chancelor got her panties in a bunch because they know that this could be the end of the nursing program at this school and covers it up by sying the instructor can pick whatever answer she wants from the options. BS there's only one answer that's what the test banks for and that's what those lovely critical thinking skills are for that they push down your throat in every class. So the chancelor comes in tells you guys your grades aren't going to get changed, gives you all a different Dean to deal with this (while the Dean that's been helping you all the entire time probable won't have a job soon because she upset the ship) and tells you guys to drop in your last semester and you might not be able to get in next semester AND YOU GUY ARE DOING IT?

Everyone who leaves is giving them exactly what they want. For you to gie up and them to win. You all are not only failing yourselves but all the classes that follow you because this is going to keep going on until someone calls them out. Do it anonymously call the BON and let them know what's going on with the original Dean's name, call the NLN so the school's accreditation is in jeopardy. Most schools ask you why you dropped or transfered programs and they also ask the school you attended why you left. Do you think the schools going to give any of the trouble makers a good reveiw for another school. What happens if none of the schools in your area accept the school your currently attendings credits? What if your schools credits don't transfer anywhere? You're done in 3 months I'd fight it for everything it was worth and if they failed me this school would be getting a hefty lawsuit as well as everyone who's trying to cover this up. I wonder how the instructor would like it if she didn't have her license anymore because she's being UNETHICAL to future students. I don't think the BON would like that very much.

I wish you luck but you really need to weigh out your options.

I would go to:

+ the press - try to get some light shed on this subject

+ the accreditation body

+ the state department of education

+ your local representative

If you think you are in danger of failing, get some light shined on this situation. If not, keep your mouth shut and your head down.

Either way, this sucks.

If you're willing, would you PM me with the name of the school?

I'm sorry to hear the latest and that you did decide to drop. I certainly hope that you are able to find a program that will accept you. For the hell these unethical people have put you through, please consider going to the media, anonymously, to prevent others from falling victim to the same. Now your story is a prime example of why many otherwise good students don't finish programs. It is a miracle that some of these people get into others schools and become nurses in spite of horrid people like you have met. Good luck.

Remember this if you can't get into another program. Excelsior College will accept your nursing classes after evaluating your transcripts. You are eligible to apply since you have completed more than 50% of a nursing program. So, there is an opportunity to finish nursing school. This is one of the best reasons for a program like Excelsior. Best wishes to you and your peers.

It depends on what the questions were. If you could reach the answer with critical thinking then yes it would be fair
