Do you think this if fair???

Published

I said I wasn't going to dwell on this, but I just can't help it.

I took a test yesterday. I passed it. But.... two of the questions my instructor had on the test we never lectured on nor was it even in our book. One of my classmates, asked her how are we suppose to know about that if we never covered it?

She replied with well, I guess you won't, but now you know what it is for next time. Next time, I thought. A few of my classmates did not pass due to the two questions. I could have gotten an A if these two questions weren't there. UGH! Each question was worth five points. Yes, thats ten points I could of had. Double UGH!

That's 80 instead of 70 for a classmate.

Is she going to do this with every test from now on? Its bad enough I don't like my med/surg. book. Now, I am scared.

Do you guys think this is fair? :o

I am really glad that you chose to meet with the Dean. Now you have to put it in the past and move forward with the understanding that your instructor is going to be mad and may push you harder to make her point. You and your classmates must be "on the ball", stay focused on the lesson plan at hand and put this dark chapter behind you. She doesn't seem the type that is going to go away without a fight, at this point my two cents worth says control what you can and accept what you can't. Remember, your Dean and Chancellor will be watching the rest of the semester, they will not only be watching the instructor, they will be watching the students and ALL concerned must be following the rules. I tell my daughter, "if you are going to make waves, make sure you can swim."

Hello. Another long day at the battle field. The dean asked our instructor for yesterdays master scantron. My instructor's reply, "I don't create those, I check my exams as I feel fit." Don't know what that means. Our Dean is fuming right now, over this. How can an instructor give us an exam and have no answers to her own exam? After clinicals we went back to school to see the tutor to assist us with titration. A test we are scheduled to take next week. In front of the tutor our instructor states, "I don't know what you think you all are going to do, but I am the one who decides who will make a good nurse not you all." "We are the minority not you all." When and if you all go out there, it won't matter, but with my kind it does." "We need more of my race out there, not you guys race." "We need the job not you guys." I and other classmates had our tape recorder going, because the tutor was teaching us about titration and it record her conversation. I am sure she did not know that. I guess she does not feel that causasians and latinos need to be nurses. I don't know. I guess it truly is a racial issue with her. Than she stated, that we can file a grievance on what she said because in the long run she will have still have her job and make money and we won't. So, we went down to Dean and we let her listen in our tape recorder what she said.

The Dean told us in confident that our instructor has had over a dozen grievances by previous students. Which told me, that this problem will not go away. Its obvious that the school administrator allows this sort of behavior.

I would really like to hear from other nursing instructors out there. Is this really necessary behavior???? Can't this be undone? We really are a good group. We don't talk back to our teachers, we are in class on time. We do all of what is asked from us. We log in over 10 extra hours a week in the computer lab. Our class is really geeky about wanting to know it. We beg to be taught. I don't get the hostility?

Are there any nursing instructors out there who can tell me what is going on?????

My grandmother is from the old country, she feels that this is how teachers disciplinethere students, this is how teachers prepare their students to be strong.

HELP!:specs:

I went from loving school to not wanting to wake up in the morning to go to class. I had a wonderful cheerful spirit. Now, I feel depressed. I feel like my instructor has taken my future and happiness away from me. For some reason, I feel empty and victimized. I don't know if that makes sense to anyone, but that is what I am feeling. My energy, my spirit is not the same. Each time, I am at clinical and speak with my patients my spirit comes alive. But as soon as I leave from the hospital, I feel like the school victimized me. Its an empty feeling. Wierd huh?

this is so absolutely disgusting and it is sad to find out that she has had many complaints against her with NOTHING done about it. No wonder she is so confident about her keeping job....I am glad, however, that at LEAST, you guys have a tape recordings of her should you choose to speak to a lawyer.

I wish your class the best of luck.

I would get together with the other nurses and call a lawyer. It's time. She has made too many threatening and racist comments for this to be allowed without legal intervention if the school will not do what is right. Keep the recording going as well as a log. It's clear the Dean is on your side, but they must fear a lawsuit from this instructor. I wonder if she plays the race card with them. Disgusting.

Keep praying and holding your head high.

If the scantrons have those little computer notations on them by the wrong answers and the grade at the problem then there's a master she just doesn't want to give it up.

If they've been having problems with her for awhile I'm guessing that since she likes to throw things out about her race that's what she does whenever someone tries to address what she's doing. Discrimination lawsuits are very expensive and are hard for the accussed to prove their innocence.

I would just keep on doing what your doing with regards of going to the Dean and letting her know that this is still going on. I don't know how long you've been in this semester but is there anyway that you could transfer to another class to avoid this and perhaps salvage the rest of your semester.

It sucks that this is happening to you. This is supposed to be the most exciting semester of school because it your last everything and this instructor is ruining it for you.

I just looked at my school's policy, and to my suprise I couldn't find where racial discrimination was addressed. I was able to find guidance addressing Sexual Harrassment and the guidance there was: "... the complaint must be made within 60 days of alleged act, to any counselor, Dean of Student Development, College Affirmative Action/Compliance Officer, or the Vice President for Academic Affairs for cases involving instructional personnel ...". There are formal and informal procedures that are to be addressed within 30 days of the written complaint.

Normally, these procedures would be essentially the same for racial issues. But notice, the COMPLAINT MUST BE MADE IN WRITING WITHIN 60 DAYS AND the school only has 30 days to act on the complaint. If your school's policy is the same, my advice now is to write up this latest incident as a separate complaint, send it through your school's Equal Opportunity Officer/ Affirmative Action Officer with a Cc to Dean of Nursing, and the Dean of Student Affairs. Basically, you should go through the EEO/Affirmative Action Office for guidance. The Dean of Nursing may be well intentioned, but her expertise is in nursing not EEO matters.

Unfortunately, you are stuck with this instructor for the time being. But, it is a depressing reality that this climate exists in many environments. I would think that this is not the first time you've been discriminated against, nor will it be the last. Most offenders are wise enough to at least attempt to hide their bias, so this may be the first time you've encountered it head-on.

Your grandmother has a point, this experience will only make you stronger and smarter on these issues. And may allow you to become more of an advocate in the future.

If the instructor is making racial comments like that and they are recorded you need to

~ put a written grievance in with the department and the main school

~ contact your state board of nursing

~ contact ACLU

~ contact an attorney

They can fear a law suit from her but they should get one from you guys.

Heck contact the local media. I've done that before and guess what...I got what I want and was treated like a princess.

I don't care what your school thinks or wants. If you all go down the proper channels and take this beyond your school...there's gonna be a storm!

I agree with the above. Put the complaint in writing and send it to all those listed above immediately. Have the other students do the same. You now have her on tape. That should be the beginning of her end. Call the press if need be.

Also, be sure to send the letters certified mail so you get a signature. Ask them for a return recepit so you have proof they were received and signed for. They won't be able to ignore it once they know you are tracking the info. And don't forget to call a lawyer. I bet one would jump on this case especially as you have her recorded.

This is not going to be simple is it? Today, the Dean looked into her/my instructor master scantron and the instructor did not have anything on it but her name and the test number. How does she know what the answers are, if their isn't one on her master scantron? After clinicals, a few of us went back to the nursing tutor. We needed help on titiration. The tutor states to us, that our instructor told her not to help us with titration, because we needed to dig and that we can't be treated like babies.

Wasn't that nice of our instructor??? So, here we go back to the Dean's office. The Dean called the chancellor, the chancellor tells the Dean that she(dean) cannot be holding our hands. That we are adults. We needed to learn how to look for information on our own.

What? What are paying the tutor for??? A few of my classmates have already spoken with an attorney. He wants 300.00 per student for a deposit. I don't have that. I live with my grandmother. I am trying to survive pay check to pay check, already. My credit card is maxed out. I can't afford an attorney.

The Dean told us that we may need to re take the exam we took, this week because she feels that it was compromised. But, the chancellor is not advocating the idea. I really feel bad for the dean. She looked really tired today. I can tell this whole situation is wearing her down.

We all feel like that. I am glad that I am not the only one involved in this. Not to sound selfish, but, I am thankful that my classmates are going through the same thing I am. I would hate to be all alone in these evil incidients she/my instructor created.

Besides the attorney fees, I still need to save money for more books for leadership, and graduation expenses, if I get there.

I am so looking forward to a good week end. Can't wait for superbowl.

:specs:

Thanks you guys for listening.

Call the media. They will have a field day.

The Dean sounds like a nice person who is trying to do right here and is having her hands tied every step of the way. Keep on going back again and again. I bet you do get to take that test again as it was clearly compromised. The instructor is cuckoo crazy. I would still have all of you send certified letters to everyone involved. I bet the Chancellor is banking on the fact that everyone will give up and they can sweep it under the rug once again. Once you put it in writing and send it to the legal department, etc. it will become harder for them to ignore.

The poor tutor is also being put in a tough spot but I would get my money back if she isn't teaching what you need. I would also call the Department of Education. They might be willing to lend a hand here for free.
