Hello All: Nursing is a second career for me too. I plan on working in nursing until retirement, but in a different capacity than now. Currently working as a floor nurse in a hospital. Home health appeals to me.:nurse:

Specializes in ER and family advanced nursing practice.

I can't say I will retire from nursing, but I might transition from patient care to education. I am in transition to advanced practice now, and it looks like I will be teaching part time as well. I could see that down the road I might be more inclined to just teach.. It is not about easier or harder, just different.

Specializes in EMS, ED, Trauma, CEN, CPEN, TCRN.

I'm not sure I'd know how to retire anyway. I can't even sit still for an hour. :D

Specializes in Med/surg, ER/ED,rehab ,nursing home.

I have been forced into retirement due to health issues. After almost 2 yrs of not working I have sort of gotten used to it. I guess when you really love the work you do, it isn't work.

Specializes in LTC, Psych, Hospice.
Nursing will be my 2nd career, but to be honest I don't plan to retire ... I may very well die holding the stethescope :D

LOL! I've said the same thing. I'm going to show up to work one day and my agency will be admitting ME onto services.

Specializes in neurosurg,med/surg,trauma,flight,case mg.

Having graduated in 1964, I am already retired from nursing: Del rom, surgeon's group hosp. nurse, med-surg, ED, Air Force flight nurse, pt. ed., research, teaching, discharg.planner, marketing, case mgr. So, I enjoyed several careers in my nursing career. So should we all!!!!

The 'golden hand cuffs' require that I remain with my employer until the end. Love the work I do as a Hospice RN in the field, am blessed to have a great work schedule and my personal life is great.

And I'm not so sure Social Security will be viable in 10 years.

Specializes in long term care Alzheimers Patients.
I never went to college when I was young and never had a "career", so nursing is the career I will retire from. I'll graduate the ADN just before my 50th birthday :) maybe write the NCLEX-RN on my birthday. Now wouldn't that be a nice 50th birthday present. :)

Yes It would be a great 50th birthday present,
