Nursing is my second career. It will be HM2VikingRN NP at retirement.

Nursing is a second career for me too. I don't think I'll ever completely retire though....

I agree with you 100% about not ever completely retiring! :D This is definitely my first and only career. I disagree with FELICIAJORDAN, though. I don't care about the toll nursing takes on me, I LOVE IT and I can't ever see myself doing anything else. It is all so worth it to me. I have my BSN and I am getting ready to do travel nursing.

Specializes in M/S, Travel Nursing, Pulmonary.

I will be a nurse for a long time, but not into my late 50s and 60s. I'll have found a job that suits my physical needs for that age group around that time.

Specializes in Cardiology (ITU), Acute Renal/Dialysis.
Nursing will be my 2nd career, but to be honest I don't plan to retire ... I may very well die holding the stethescope :D

I fear I may die holding the stethoscope but not because I want to, Nursing will kill me! not the job or the patients but the politics and the ugly side of many "colleagues" who are bullies & the system which allows these people to prosper on the backs of others! being of the sensitive, caring nature, Nurses like me suffer daily from the poor managers who allow their cronies/running mates to dictate who is "in" and who isn't. I plan to change careers before I die of a heart attack from stress. I have tried to change things, but only got treated worse as a result. Good Luck to all those who love Nursing, my career change will be on the other side, teaching new Nursing Students. Hopefully some of them will listen to mine & others experiences and never treat a colleague the way i have been treated.:redpinkhe

This is my second career, so yeah, I will retire from nursing. I don't understand why some people are whining and moaning about "nursing will kill you if you're in it long enough to retire from it."

I'm ENTERING nursing at the age of 46. Yes, I realize hospital bedside nursing takes its toll, which is why I'm already thinking about "what's next" in my career. I figure I will give myself 5 to 8 years on the floor. The great thing about nursing is I can go on and do a multitude of things, all of them pretty interesting. In 5 to 8 years I see myself transitioning into diabetic education or cardiac rehab/education.

Thanks to some wise investments I have my retirement age set for somewhere between 55 and 57. But I've never really wanted to just retire and do nothing. And that's the other great thing about nursing: I can retire from fulltime nursing at that age and go down to part-time and still make decent money to supplement my retiremunt funds. I see myself working part-time until my mid-sixties, maybe in the area of public or community health.

Lucky you, you have it all worked out GOOD LUCK :nurse: However, I dont think Nursing will kill me if I live long enough to retire (which at 44 I have another 23 yrs left) I think the stress of working alongside smug, heartless, bullies will kill me. Yes, being a Nurse will allow me to change careers so that I can teach, that is where my heart & I believe my mental health. lies. Most of us dont have wise investments or have been lucky enough for our life plans to go the way we want due to being widowed or divorced or having children/elderly parents etc. Have a bit of diplomacy & compassion for your colleagues please :redpinkhe

unfortunatly your attitude captures the very reason I need to get out of Nursing & quick! :jester: I will retire one day, but at a job/career that allows me to be happy & consequently live & retire with peace, good health & memories of something I could contribute to society without the sacrifice of my principles & morals GOODLUCK :redpinkhe

In all reality nursing will suck the life out of you mentally and physically. Anyone who does make it to retirement, especially being a floor nurse will suffer the consequences. Get a second degree and plan to nurse from behind a desk. I never thought I would.

HAVE YOU THOUGHT OF TEACHING THE NEXT GENERATION? :nurse: THATS MY NEXT STEP :nurse: GOOD LUCK

19 years of nursing so far....19 more to go........if I retire then.

The nurses' attitude is that nurses attitude, I'm not sure I'm understanding you. This person loves nursing and that's the reason you need to get out of nursing quick? Doesn't make sense to me. However, you're attitude is yours and you're allowed. I hope you do find that career, it's what we all strive for. I think that while it's impossible for you, it is entirely possible that what you describe can be found in nursing for some people. Me, I'm not that pollyannish and am a bit more middle of the road. I can't imagine doing anything else but nursing, but it's tough. Regardless I do intend on retireing in good health, with good memories and with peace of mind....if it kills me. :lol2:

Specializes in Cardiac Care.

Nursing is a second career for me, too... changed from administration to nursing. I'm too old to change professions again! I'll either retire as a nurse or drop dead as one!
