I will definitely retire as a nurse. I can't see myself doing anything else. The only thing i will try to do is climb to the top.

It seems to me that I have always been a nurse, and I will be one until I die

Someday I want to finish my biology degree and work at a zoo. As interesting and exciting as I find all things related to nursing my dream has always been to be a zoologist. So I will work as a nurse until I'm closer to retirement age and then I will follow another career path. I love the idea of being the old lady that conducts tours around the attractions that knows all the nerdy facts about animals. :)

I've been working in nursing for 39 years. I've had wonderful experiences, worked with great nurses and supervisors. But now, at almost 59, I'm looking forward to retiring. I will retire at 62, even if it means downsizing, selling my home, and moving. I won't subject my body and health to anymore physical wear and tear. I won't deal with all the nonsense coming down from administration anymore. I won't deal with co-workers who don't want to do what's best for the patient, who won't 'be 100% safe' and slow down in moving patients in and out of a specialty lab....because administration thinks the more patients we do the better, etc........I'm sorry to say I don't like or agree with a lot of changes I'm seeing in nursing. (another subject!)
Yes, I'll retire as a nurse. I'm hoping my health will hold out until I'm 62. Unfortunately, I may have to medically retire before 62, because 'you can't work light duty or reduced daily hours in a critical care/specialty lab area'....

I loved being a nurse! I still love it. But I had to leave the public sector to care for loved ones here at home. My mother and dad's health began to go south several years ago, and then my sweet husband was diagnosed with pharyngeal Ca. So I had my own little LTC right here. My dear husband and mom are gone now, but my dad is still with me, thank goodness! He is vision impaired and still needs care here. So I didn't exactly switch careers, but added a new one. I can do graphic design from home while caring for him at the same time.
But you know what? I still dream about my career in the "front lines"....

I did the opposite -- went from 10+ years in graphic design/desktop publishing to nursing.

Hi designer RN EMT,
I am sorry that your mother and husband passed away but I am sure that they received good care while they were alive (from you). You seem like you are doing ok with it. I am sure your father is still receiving that good care. I can only imagine how hard it was to take care of 3 people at once (and not having to go to work). It is a 24/7/365 job and some people don't realize that (ones not in the medical field). God bless you!
A great example of the grass being greener on the other side of the fence....

Thank you for your understanding. Yes, I gave the best care I knew how...as to how I'm coping....well, one expects to outlive a parent, I think. And she's been gone nearly three years, so I'm coping fairly well now. But my dear husband has only been gone 6 months. I wonder if I'll ever cope with being without him.
Bless you for your caring and understanding of the 24/7 nature of this committment!

I have been an LPN for 18 years and cuurently working on my RN, so I will probably be retiring from nursing. Just not really sure which area, since I have worked in long-term care/geriatrics, wound care, sub-acute/rehab, and now LTAC so far, I am hoping to expand my horizons after achieving my goal of RN. The world of nursing is so full of possibilities!!

I'll probably "retire" somewhere around 70 y.o. from nursing and then continue in teaching or legal work in between my wished for fantasy trips around the world and archaeological digs.

Second career, I plan to stay with it till I quit working for a living or win the lottery, whichever comes first.
