Do you like your job?

Published

When I was in school, I could not wait to become a nurse. I was so excited because I thought I would just love my job. My question to all the nurses out there is Do you like your job? Why? What do you do if you don't?

Specializes in LTC, HH, and Case Mangement.

I love my job and the company I work for. I do homecare and like Mom2boysRN pretty much summed up every reason I do and I do not like it. I just leased a brand new car in Nov and have to be very careful how many miles I put on it. Luckily my husband has a little bit of an older car, so I can always use his if need be. I am currently in the process of trying to get back into school to complete my ADN. I would love to stay where I am afterward and possibly case manage. I love all of our RN case managers. I haven't had any problems.

I work in Post partum and I like my job Most of the time :)

I work in the OR in a hospital somewhere. I love my job, most days. Some days suck. But that's the nature of the OR. It can be a crazy pace, or be slow. Anything can happen.

Specializes in CCU, SICU, CVSICU, Precepting & Teaching.

ICU nurse here, love it.

I'd love it more if I actually spent more time with my patients. Most of our time at work is spent in front of the computer charting every tiny detail possible. It's sad.

Emergency nurse: LOVE. IT!

An old NP told me the MOST important thing is to know your place on the continuum of order to chaos. If you're orderly, you'll hate the ER, and if you're chaotic, you'll hate working in a shot clinic. She said just get to know yourself and take any job that puts you in your comfort zone, because exact specialty of preference doesn't matter nearly as much as being able to survive. I want to add that the work culture of the places you will consider is super important. I was in an ER waiting room once and the level of fear there was so high there were 3 RNs standing at the desk blaming each other for something. That hospital was paying a nice sign-on bonus when I was applying but no thanks! Choose carefully. As Frank Zappa sang "Do ya love it, do ya hate it? There it is, the way ya made it."

Specializes in ER.

Eh, I am not so certain I like the ICU but I am new so it bothers me that I have a learning curve. I liked the ER as a paramedic but then I knew a lot about that ER. I have to give jobs 1 year before I make up my mind.

I love my patients and many of my coworkers. I'm liking my place of employment less and less. I don't hate my job, but hate certain BS things I have to put up with/do.

I'm a school nurse now, so yes. My old job on a rehab unit, I hated.

I love my job. I actually look forward to going into work in the morning.

There have been times when I've been unhappy with my workplace, and in those situations, I've looked for a different job. Life is too short to have a job you hate or dread. I could never live that way. Not only that, but it's unfair to your coworkers.

^^^^^ This.

It is so important that you like where you are. If not your unhappiness shows and can drag others down. This can ultimately change the culture of your work environment if you have too many working like this. When I was nineteen I would see people around the water cooler complaining. It was in those years I realized if you don't like your job, go somewhere else.

When I went through this myself it was easier said then done, or so I thought. When I wanted to leave bad enough I was more creative then finally found my dream job. With that said:

Yes, I LOVE my job in an ambulatory surgery center with 12 eye surgeons. I love eyeballs. :D
