Do you keep your rn shoes in the car after a shift?

Published

I figured I'd ask. A few of my friends and I were chatting about this: Do you keep your nursing shoes in your car, bring them into your home, or clean them after a shift?

I'm only in nursing school, but when I go to clinical I keep my shoes in a bag in my car. I know all the icky things that are on that hospital floor; don't want that transferred onto my car pedals or into my home.

Nope, they do get left just inside the door though. We don't wear shoes inside at our house.

I keep mine in a shoebox in the garage. lol

Specializes in none as of to date.

I put mine anywhere there is sun: in the car or outside the back door on my porch..I figured I can have good old sunshine help kill nasty germs, while I air them out.;)

shoeboxin trunk. for sure!

I take my shoes off in the garage when I get home, carry them thru the house without stopping all the way to the shower, spray the bottoms with diluted bleach and let them "soak" while I take a shower. Then I rinse them off and let them dry in the bathroom. Yes, it's a little overboard.

I walk through the kitchen (no garage), through the dining room, and to the bathroom then kick them off.

No one's gotten sick or died yet in my house. My cat likes to chew on them.

Kicked mine off at the door but only because I put all my stuff in one spot near the door. I did the trunk thing at the start of clinicals, but then figured if I didn't leave my regular shoes in the trunk when I visited a family member in the hospital, why did I need to do it with work shoes? If had a messy shift, I'd just give 'em a wipe down with alcohol wipe or lysol (patent leather is easy to wipe clean) :) Pretty sure I've tracked in some gnarly stuff on my everyday, regular shoes anyways.

At the end of my shift, I wipe everything down-including the surface of my shoes- with Caviwipes. I use this antibacterial spray on my shoes before I get in the car and then when I get home, the shoes are left by the door. I don't want to track anything icky home.

I've never done anything special with my shoes or clothes (25 years and counting), and no one's ever gotten sick or anything.
