Do you enjoy TV surgical/medical shows?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I will be starting the nursing program in May, and I wonder if other students or nurses can tell me if they enjoy watching medical and surgical shows or not? I love watching them all! Will I grow to dislike them once clinicals start or after I become a nurse? What was your experience?

Thanks for the input!

I have to say I may be one of the few nurses to witness this incredibly rare event. A doctor actually placing an IV!!! It was in a teaching hospital and on night shift. None of the three nurses on shift could get an IV in. The senior resident actually spent over an hour and got one placed. In ten years, I've never seen another doctor (except for anesthesia) attempt an IV.

What doctor walks into a pt's house, period???

My uncle still makes house calls. But then, he's not snooping and looking for poisons...

I currently work for a podiatrist and he still makes housecalls to eldery and housebound patients :)

Wow.........

I think the last medical show I watched was MASH ;p

I actually work with a Dr. that will draw blood. He used to be phlebotomist while going to school, and I think he enjoys still getting to do it once in a while. It does freak others though. I had an appointment once with another Dr. in a different department. She asked where I worked and when I told her, she said "You must work with Dr. XXXX. My husband saw him and he drew his blood, right in the office by himself!" Made me giggle.

I do love watching House, but I get a little put off with the 'searching of the patient's home' thing. I just mutter that they would get arrested for breaking and entering in the real world.

As for the comment a couple of pages back that Drs must learn IV insertions, etc..during training, I've seen residents lately who needed to be taught how to do BPs. They said they were never taught how to in medical school.

I work with a doc who had no licensed or certed staff in his office. He did everything himself, with just a chaperone for gynie exams....gave his own shots, everything. He's the only one I have ever known who did that.

I don't watch it on a regular basis but my boyfriend's mom and sister watch Grey's Anatomy. I saw part of the episode this past week and there was a character dressed like a doctor and she was MAKING A BED.

I started laughing hysterically and everyone looked at me like they didn't get it. :lol_hitti

Specializes in Psychiatric.

I adore watching the medical shows on TLC and Discovery.

I also watch 'Grey's Anatomy' but I too tend to yell at the TV about some of the stuff they do...remember the episode where Yang and Izzy were digging through poo looking for something a kid ate? Ain't gonna happen in MY hospital LOL...there was another episode where a patient had to be taken to the psych ward and when they got there the door said 'Welcome to the Psychiatric Ward' (which was fine...I'm cool with that) but on either side of the door were BIG floor-length windows with blinds covering them, and a patient pulled the blinds up and was leering out at the docs and the girl going in! I nearly fell out of my chair laughing! LOL All in all though, I do like the show LOL...

Plus I do all that 'Why in the **** are they shocking asystole?' and 'Where exactly is the tube for that nasal cannula going? It's not hooked up to anything that I can see...' LOL

Docs making beds and taking pts to the bathroom...think I'll go dream now...

Specializes in acute care.

I just starting watching grey's anatomy and I like it so far...My favorite channel to watch is Discover Health...I love to watch the surgies shows, I and just started watching Untold stories of the ER...it's amazing and I think I'll have to consider an ER position when I become a nurse,....did anyone see the episode last night with the man who had a tree through his neck? horrifying, yet fascinating

Specializes in CVICU.

I don't know if I've ever admitted this before, but I credit Discovery Health with the greater part of my decision to become a nurse. I was hooked on their shows, especially the L&D and surgery shows. Thought I wanted to go into one of those specialties...

Those dreams quickly faded after I started nursing school - I'm a CVICU nurse now! - but all of those shows definitely put a bug in my ear, so to speak!

Oh, and... I watch House for the interesting medical cases. I watch Grey's for the drama. I watch Scrubs for the laughs. I don't watch a single one of them for being true to life!
