Do you enjoy TV surgical/medical shows?

I will be starting the nursing program in May, and I wonder if other students or nurses can tell me if they enjoy watching medical and surgical shows or not? I love watching them all! Will I grow to dislike them once clinicals start or after I become a nurse? What was your experience?

Thanks for the input!

I love medical shows....ER, House (not ideal), Trauma: Life in the ER, Gray's Anatomy....I even like Scrubs...it's kinda funny!

I don't enjoy any television shows, but I'm weird.

Some of them are pretty good! We still laugh, though, at how unrealistic it is for the doctor to call for a stat MRI, for example, and within minutes, personally wheel the patient in for the exam and then....actually do the test themselves. Once on "House", they ordered a colonoscopy and did it within the hour. Not only would they not do it themselves, but they'd have a rather messy exam without a prep. Sometimes I get mad at House when he's so insensitive to his patients. I hope people don't think a doctor could really get away with what he says to his patients. A doctor wouldn't have his job long if he did that in life. (When he says inappropriate stuff to his staff...now that's a different story....that really does go on in real life!)

When I was in school I was hooked on ER. It was pretty exciting to hear them throw out the medical terms and diagnosis' that I was learning. I felt like an insider to the medical profession!

Specializes in nursery, L and D.

I work in OB (nursery) and the OB shows drive me crazy, but I still watch them now and again. It makes folks think their gonna have a nice pretty clean 3 month old looking baby in an hour, with no pain or effort. The shows like birth day are even worse, IMO. They screw things up all the time and I think, don't they even have a medical expert to consult?

I don't really have much patience for the fiction medical shows, like House or ER (although I do like House when I get a chance to see it), but I love Mystery ER, Mystery Diagnosis, and Diagnosis Unknown....all on Discovery Health. They have reenactments and they can be dramatic but the stuff you learn is amazing. Things you have never heard of in nursing school!!

I NEVER get tired of these shows. I can't wait until a new episode. For most people I don't think that changes once you are out of school because you most likely went into nursing because you love learning....:monkeydance:

No because of the inaccuracies. When ER first came out my ex used to tell me to shut up because I kept commenting.

I really enjoy "House" and used to be a big fan of ER (til they killed off Dr Green:madface: )...however, the hubby will no longer watch them with me because I have an annoying tendency to sit in my chair and say little things like "uh huh.....they did NOT just do that!!!" or "now, in REAL life, the nurse would be putting in that IV..not the doctor!!" or "the new ACLS guidelines say we would not be doing it that way!!".......poor man now just rolls his eyes and retreats into our room where he can watch ESPN in peace!!!:lol2: My daughter will be heading off to med school in august and she and I really enjoy watching the REAL medical shows on the Discovery Channel, the Leaning Channel and the likes.....sort of gives her an idea of what she could be in for in the future!!!

Yep....some non-nurses still argue with me that you shock a patient in asystole

The only medical related show I like to watch and am completely hooked to is Greys Anatomy. But, I sit there and comment on the numerous things the nurses and doctors do when they mess up on something (either the wording or diagnosis).

One thing that I really get annoyed about on TV shows is the way they do CPR and ACLS. For example, each time CPR is required on Greys Anatomy, the compression:breath rate is always different (when it's supposed to be 30:2). In one of the more recent episodes, a doctor (Meredeth Grey) was in Cardiac Arrest and she received 2 HOURS of constant ACLS now come on... very unrealistic!

So the Discovery channel-type shows are fairly realistic? I was wondering if the "real life" shows were in fact close to accurate. In particular, are the surgery scenes shortened so much that they no longer represent an actual procedure?
