Do you belong to a Nurses Association? Do you feel it's worth it? I'm deciding on my options. Thanks -Andrea

Proud member of the AACN. I have not joined the ANA.....I doubt that I ever will. I was a guest at several meetings of the IL arm of the ANA when I was a student. I agree with some of their thinking, but definately not all. DUES are astronomical.....which is the primary reason that I do not join. I can't AFFORD to!!

Specializes in 5 yrs OR, ASU Pre-Op 2 yr. ER.
By limiting their scope to BSN and ANP and higher nurses, the ANA limits it membership. That doesn't stop them from CLAIMING to represent all nurses.

They just don't represent the voices of all RNs.

Or any LPNs/LVNs.

Or students, for that matter.

But, as long as they purposely insult me with a 'technical' slur that has no basis - and never had a basis - in reality, I turn my backs on them.

This is why Hades will freeze over before I ever join the ANA, once i would be "eligable" or in other words, good enough  . Same with AORN. I've already informed my employer that once i become an RN, don't even bother asking me to join AORN.

Granted, i belong to NAPES (open to all NURSES). I also belong to NFLPN and the VLPNA . While someone could claim that the two that i belong to are also elitist oragnizations since they are limited to LPNs, there's a difference. Both of those organizations say LPN and represent LPNs, yet the ANA is called the American NURSES Association, yet only represents RNs, and IMHO is false advertising at its finest.:nono:

This is an old thread, but I answered the poll today because I recieved communiction that I will be inducted to Sigma Theta Tau International on December 2, 2006 as an undergrad. I also joined NSNA this semester.

I never have been in any nursing association but am now thinking about it. To me it was just spending extra money to put on a resume that I belonged to an association. But now with my background I wonder if it would creditial me higher? I don't know some of the nurses I have worked with with all the extra letters after their name and associations they belonged to were very scary to work with --like book smart but hands on ???don't know where their brain went. Hating to sound cheap what do they realy offer other then newsletters which can be found @ work or on the net.??

I belong to the Academy of Med/Surg Nurses - AMSN. Med/Surg is a specialty in itself, and I am proud to belong to AMSN. I also received my Med/Surg certification through AMSN so I am now "CMSRN" - Certified Medical Surgical RN.

ANA to me, way too political, too expensive.
