Disrespect & Profanity

I've got a couple of burrs under my saddle blanket and am requesting feedback from the allnurses community regarding professional behaviors:

I believe:

Someone should be referred to with their title of Ms, Mrs, Mr, Dr, etc. and their surname until permission is granted otherwise.

Profanity in professional situations is rarely acceptable and if so used, should be in consensual agreement, e.g. "May I speak frankly?"

It gets my goat how some believe they have the freedom to address another or use language that is not becoming to a professional relationship.

My wife, medical nurse Belinda, told me that at Anomaly Memorial Hospital the staff are encouraged to refer to the patients by their first names because it comes across as being more friendly.

In reading some articles on the internet, profanity is condoned and supported in some professional situations because it "releases tension".

"Bullhockey!" say I.

In my experiences, respect is received, even with Salt-of-the-Earth Psychotics, by giving them respect. And that respect, reinforced, has prevented escalating patients from experiencing total meltdowns: The statement, "I expect you to give me the same respect I give you" has caused many an angry patient to take pause.

I think of the multitude of smiles I've received, asking a patient, "May I call you...?" Or: "What would you like to be called?"

Profanity is rarely necessary in a professional situation. The use of profanity can be a sign of loss of control, or apathy. I hear profanity from an acquaintance as their way of saying, "I can say whatever I want with no regard to you".

I truly enjoy using euphemisms to say the vilest thing in the sweetest, most respectful way. Forms of the word "imprudent" has become one of my favs as of late: "You can't fix imprudence" sounds so much more respectful than the mainstream saying. Or: "How imprudent of administration to do that!"

Euphemisms help to take the focus of how something is said and puts the focus on what is said.

What do you think?

Oh DaveyDo. How I love your cartoons.

I would love to shake Wrongway Weasel and Wrongway Clark until some sense crept in accidentally.

It would be too easy for them to appreciate the great nurse that you are and let you do your J.O.B.

This whole situation is just exhausting.

I am hoping for the best for you.

I hope you get what you want.

Thank you, yaRNthrower. My simple little cartoons are immensely enjoyable for me to create and are a true catharsis. It makes me happy to know you enjoy them.

Dave, Since you were unable to meet today and have requested this matter to be reviewed by Mr. Bumblingham, CEO, you are not to report to your scheduled shift until a we have a chance to meet and discuss. Please note my available times for Monday are as follows: 8:30am 9:00am or 10:00am.

I'm waiting by my phone in my art room should Rita want to get in contact with me.

While waiting her call, I came up with a cartoon, a graphic rendition, of one of the situations in which I have previously documented:

Well it's Monday. Did you meet with anyone? Are you personally responsible for anyone's aneurysm? Are you hoisting a few and celebrating your newfound freedom?

Enquiring minds want to know.

TriciaJ:

I was thinking the same thing. Hopefully common sense ruled the day.

Anyways... Davey DO, thinking of you

Still waiting on the update Davey Do. Hope everything went alright. In the meantime, I shall wait. image.png.1194235ad432eaa6e8eaf3f122e55164.png

I'm on a day schedule, basically sleeping from nine to six, and my body loves it. And to top it all off, I get to awaken to these nice posts!

No one called me yesterday, no aneurysms suffered, TriciaJ. Common Sense was not breached since there were no interventions by imprudent people, RNNPICU. And, NurseBlaq, thank you for your patience. Tea can be such a soothing elixir.

I figure HR Rita didn't telephone due to me going over her head. I'm giving CEO Ted a day or two to gather & digest all this information. I might call Ted's secretary today to assure he received my nine page fax I sent Saturday. If Ted doesn't call me today, I'll give him a call tomorrow.

On my own website, I put all the current cartoons together, the graphic representations, in sequence, and there's a relatively nice flow to a story.

Hi Davey, just to let you know that I am still here and following this. Unfortunately as I live in the UK we have a different set of work rules and employment laws so any intervention on my part may be less than useless but be assured I am interested and reading every post. ?

Also in your corner Davey. Should you be released from your bonds of Wrongway employment, I suggest you send a complete story with graphic representations to CEO Ted so he has something to remember you by.

I plan to go out and do some yard work on this sunny day, but wanted to respond to your posts before I did so:

Thanks for your interest and involvement, Grumpy. I'd be interested to know how the "different set of work rules and employment laws" in the UK differ from the U.S. of A. Enlighten me, please?

And thanks for your support also, caliotter. You know, I was thinking about submitting my graphic representations to the CEO during this process. Graphic renditions of events are admissible in courts as clarifying evidence. I read something along the lines of "cameras are not permitted in courts of laws, however artists have a protected right to make sketches during courtroom proceedings".

Surely a graphic representation in an employment dispute should be allowed.

Caliotter, agitating minds think alike!

I see no harm unless he wants to go out of his way to be offended. He might even be impressed favorably and act accordingly.

My grandson who is artistic decorates work aprons of coworkers with a marker. I told him he should charge for his services. Art deserves a place at work!

When Rita gave you a list of her available times for Monday, is it possible she expected you to pick one of those times to meet?

When you sent your info to the CEO did you indicate that you expected a response?

I'm just concerned that they might try to blame you for not showing up to meet with them.

Meanwhile enjoy the sunshine and how good it feels to be in bed when it's dark out. And you'll relate to the movie Office Space if you haven't already seen it. Or even if you have.
