Disney Culture in Hospitals

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Anyone out there been visited by Disney yet? That's right, Disney. Mickey Mouse was there as well as a couple of other characters. All employees were required to attend the 2 plus hour sessions and the gist is that you are working in a perfect environment and you are to provide perfect care.No patients should ever have a complaint because we are at their (and their family members) beck and call 24/7.

It was like a new horror movie...The Stepford Staff.

health care is not truly a business in conservative terms. so many rules that apply to the private sector can not be applied to health care. the role of the 'customer' is always changing. the pt thinks they're it, the dr thinks they're it, the insurance co thinks they're it, and of course, we nurses think we're it.

Didn't they tell you in nursing school: EVERYBODY'S A CLIENT.

So buck up all you Chips and Dales out there.

And remember: "It's a small world after all . . ."

And hey, "Let's be Disney out there!"

It's a world of laughter,

A world of tears.

It's a world of hopes,

And a world of fears.

There's so much that we share,

That it's time we're aware,

It's a small world after all.

Chorus:

It's a small world after all.

It's a small world after all.

It's a small world after all.

It's a small, small world.

There is just one moon,

And one golden sun.

And a smile means,

Friendship to every one.

Though the mountains divide,

And the oceans are wide,

It's a small world after all.

Chorus:

It's a small world after all.

It's a small world after all.

It's a small world after all.

It's a small, small world. :Melody: :Melody:

I have actually considered downloading Be Our Guest and Whistle While You Work. But I have to be careful because I am one of the ones who failed the cult indoctrination big time and they are trying to get rid of us who won't walk around saying how great everything is!! It is just so insulting to be subjected to this. As pointed out in many of the posts, if they would just use that money toward staffing and realize that most patients choose hospitals based on where their doctors have privledges we could save a ton of time and even more money!!!

Shades of re engineering, same type of mentality.

"I like Disney. Been there several times. IF my employer brought Disney to work, I might be forced to think that they expect me to treat work like a vacation. And they might not appreciate the methods I employed to 'make it so'. See, I have JUST the type of disposition to take the wrong message out of such things."

OH you GOT me. "Be our guest" would have been so much more on point.

Actually, I was thinking of the most annoying song, not the most apt. Shoot, "It's a small world" is so annoying, even DISNEY makes fun of it, as they did in the "Lion King" when Scar annoyingly says, "ANYTHING but that!"

:Melody: :Melody:

"Come on and lift your glass.

You've won your own free pass,

to be our guest. . .

Life is so unnerving for a servant who's not serving.

He's not whole without a soul to wait upon.

Ah, those good old days when we weren't useful.

Suddenly those good old days are gone.

Ten years we've been rusting,

Taking breaks instead of nursing.

Needing exercise, a chance to use our skill.

Most days we just lay around the hospital.

Flabby, fat and lazy,

you walked in and oops-a-daisy!

It's a guest! It's a guest!

Sakes alive, well, I'll be blessed!

Water's poured and meds are scored.

I've had the bedsheets freshly pressed.

With bedtime, she'll want Ambien.

And, my dear, I won't be ambling.

While the aides tap their soft shoes

I'll be medicating, just for you!

Blankets warmed, piping hot.

Heavens sake, is that a spot?

Clean it up! We want the company impressed.

Except for you, there's NOTHING else to do!

Is it one pill or two? CHORUS

For you, our guest. Be our guest!

She's our guest! Be our guest!" :Melody: :Melody:

Has anyone ever asked the "Disney" reps what their response is when a "guest" screams at them "give me my medication now you f@#$ b%^&*".

I would be truely interested to hear the respose to that. I would guess that at Disney World belligerent guests don't get to stay in the parks for very long.

What a joke!!!!!

From someone who actually worked at Disney as a teen.....

You are pretty much expected to smile and placate everyone...after all it's Disney.

They don't pay well, and my costume didn't not permit me to sit down while wearing it....and you never are seen "out of character" (costume).

Little brats can deliberately vomit on you and you have to keep your cool.

(the first time that I went to a six flags, I was in for a rude awakening)

I really wanted to be a mermaid at Weeki Wachee instead.

And this differs from your average acute care hospital how??

And that $500 per employee could have been used for extra staff to create the same effect - that the hospital actually has the staff to take care of the patients!

Grrr!

Banditrn, when you say some of the staff would have given them money, do you mean from their own pocket?

Once I had someone who did not like the generic shasta cola we had in the pantry, so asked if there was a soda machine. I said there was one in the lobby and this individual had the nerve to ask me for the money!!

I'm sure at this point they've spent MORE than the $500 - as I understand that was for the initial indoctrination, and they've been doing it for over 6 years.

Yes, some of the staff would have given them money from their purse, then turned it into an opportunity to advance themselves.:barf02:

My work partner and I both got counceled for not coming into work smiling. Well, we didn't come in crying either - after that whenever we looked at her we were quick to put on a crazed smile!:wink2: And I had to remind that supervisor frequently that she wasn't smiling.

My hospital hasn't gone so far as to bring Mickey or Donald but for the past month there has been this creepy woman sitting in the main lobby(in scrubs) with this crazy lady grin on her face. When you walk through the doors she chirps "Good Morning!". I think her job is to sit there until the volunteers come in at the info desk and function as a one woman welcoming commitee. I am NOT a morning person so I have to restrain myself from throwing things at her-it's become a point of honor not to even acknowledge she's there. I mean, if she was just ultrafriendly and was doing it because she's nice, fine. But its so insincere the way she says it and I just know it was some corporate pinheads idea to have her sit there.

Everybody break out the goofy hats and Bermuda Shorts

OT: thought some of you might be interested in this- check out http://www.StupidGuestTricks.com. Even if the nurses don't act very "Disney" all the patients sure do!:uhoh21:

I lost a job for that once. They came up with a hundred different ways to say it, but it was basically that they didn't like my "attitude." Because I was so rude as to say "Hello" instead of "goodmorninghowareyouooooooo??" when I came in, and didn't always have a fake smile on my face. Most of the other women who worked in that office were the sort who ALWAYS had a smile- a big, FAKE smile- on their faces. It was creepy.

I was at Disney World recently, and I was amazed at the quality of their service staff. The people who clean up, take your tickets, sell you stuff- amazing! I know Disney is like the evil empire or something, but whatever they're drugging their employees with is working- they all seemed really happy to be there.
