What are the top 3 dislikes about being an RN?

always being shortstaffed.

everything i dislike about my job can usually be traced back to the above!

Specializes in GERIATRICS AND PRISON.

1) The coworker who thinks she should be off for all holidays, the day before and the day after. Tells me I do not have children so I should work.

2)The same coworker telling everyone how bright and smart she is.

What I love about my job is that what comes around goes around.

1. Kissing up to difficult pt. because you know that you will sit through another long meeting with administration while they lecture you on "ratings" and how you aren't presenting ADIET correctly.

2. Doctors who get upset when you call them in the middle of the night....if you don't want a call find another job!

3. The catty behavior among co-workers. Lets just work together for heavens sake.

Specializes in Hospice, Adult Med/Surg.

Oh, AMEN, Sister!!! One of my co-workers once had a doctor tell him, after he called for orders on a new patient at midnight, "What are you? Drunk, or just stupid???" UGHHH...how arrogant! And once the same doctor yelled at another of my co-workers at 7 PM because, "I'm trying to take a shower, you idiot! Can't you people leave me alone????" Here's the funny part: he would not yell at me and a few of the other female nurses, because he was constantly hitting on us and didn't want us to think that he was "mean". Ha Ha Ha...like him being mean to my co-workers doesn't make him mean? What a class A jerk!!!!

Specializes in Med/surg, telemetry, ICU.

things i most dislike about nursing:

1.charge nurses giving unfair assignments (giving themselves and their friends 4 walkie-talkies while other rns get 5 complete cares + an admission). some nurses will be so busy they'll be pulling their hair out while a few others have no problem sitting at the nurses' station browsing internet or exchanging recipes/gossip.

2.having to document everything, sometimes just for the sake of documentation, which leaves little time to spend at the bedside.

3.older nurses bullying younger, less experienced ones.

what i love about nursing:

1. making a huge difference in pts' and families' lives.

2. job security (even in this economy).

3.variety of choices in nursing.

4. teamwork, opportunity to meet so many different people.

5. it is never boring.

(i could go on and on)

Dislike:

1. Doctors that treat you awful or make you feel stupid

2. Difficult co-workers

3. Working holidays and weekends

Love:

1. When a confused resident remembers you

2. Knowing you helped a family and resident through death or at least try to make it peaceful

3. When your team is wonderful

Specializes in M/S, MICU, CVICU, SICU, ER, Trauma, NICU.

Stupid people

Stupid people who come to our hospital

Stupid people in general

Did I mention stupid people??....

1. Undefined job boundaries. I am rarely able to say "not my job". Making sure the doctors, pharmacy, housekeeping, and dietary do their jobs is part of it.

(My sister works in x-ray. She has clearly defined boundaries. She also has no charting and sees one patient at a time.)

2. Uncertainty. A good day can turn bad very quickly.

I totally agree with this!!!

#1. Entitled, non-compliant, rude patients and family members. This by far is THE worst part of my job.

#2. Working holidays.

#3. Being exposed to bodily fluids and illnesses, and risk of injuries to back, shoulders, ect.

1) working on weekends

2) working on holidays

3) might catch something and bring it home

Specializes in PCU/tele.

1. having a boss who has never worked the floor a day in their life and tell US how to do our jobs!

2. being short staffed EVERY day, and then getting slammed with m/s admits when a certain house sup. is working :icon_roll(and also having worse staffing than m/s has on any given day)

3. spending more time on side jobs that we are forced to do now instead of spend time at the bedside.
