Discharge orders you'd LIKE to write!!!

Published

Hey, this quote from MLOS was in the middle of another thread:

"Maybe this is better suited to an ER thread, but here's a brief list of discharge instructions I would love to give some days:

1) ATVs & ETOH are bad.

2) Stop drinking a fifth of liquor each day - it's bad for you.

3) If you insist on OD-ing on your Klonopin, just take them all, DO NOT crush them & shoot them up w/your heroin.

4) If you go looking for a fight in a bar, you WILL find one.

:smackingf I could go on and on ..."

I think this is a great idea for a thread! I'd love to hear the responses from our ER nurses!!! :)

You aint kiddin sista! When the attending physician wrote for 1mg of morphine I told him he was out of his mind and if it was a scrotum I'll bet he'd write for a dilaudid PCA. He then smiled and wrote me a standing order for morphine 2mg IVP q 5 minutes PRN.

AMEN!

Thanks Jen2 for your reply.

Er um, I am 2nd semester student in a 2 year RN getting therapeutic communication drilled into into me from every direction...

Criminy. I'm only a pre-RN student (working on the pre-requisites to the pre-requisites to the nursing program), and I find this thread and others like it hilarious. I hope that isn't an indication of total insanity becoming likely by the time I'm licensed

Find a primary care MD and quit using the ER as your "primary care" facility.

That rant had to be therapeutic for the RN who wrote it! I know it was crass, but I'm sure she wasn't saying anything many of us haven't felt or thought at some time in our careers.

Am I the first reader that has found 75% of this thread to be sadly lacking in compassion. I understand the need for humor but come on - some of the disgust is so seething.

The homeless man was a child once who didn't PLAN to grow up and be a homeless drunk. Alcoholism IS a disease and so is mental illness.

Hating oneself so much that they actually put a gun to their head and pull the trigger is a tragedy - the comment about not doing it properly was cruel.

I hope to god I am never an ER patient for any reason that could be "annoying" to the nurses.

Call me an idealist, or a party pooper

yet I had to put in my 2 cents

Wait until you become a nurse, you will feel differently. Sometimes we need humor to get through the day and this is just an expression of that. It does not mean that we do not take care of our patients. BTW, when you graduate if you come to work with this kind of holier-than-thou attitude, you will not be very well liked by your coworkers.

I work with an ER doc who firmly believes that everyone over 70 should be required to wear a helmet.

Oh please...there will always be plenty of legitamitely sick people to keep us in business. People are living to be 90-100 nowadays. Our jobs aren't going anywhere. When the morons tie up the ER with their BS, it prevents us from spending the time we need with the truly ill or injured, who of course never complain.

I wonder how he will feel about that as he gets older

A discharge order I'd like to write: Chest pain does not mean that we will push 10 mg of MS q 5 min because you request it.

The ER doc cannot refill your prescription of Darvocet, but he can admit you with a no narcotics order.

Small animals are pets and not sex toys.

Dropping your father (who's had a major stroke and cannot speak) off to the ER does not mean we cannot track you down (the family drops him off and leaves him when they want to go out of town.)

This is not Hotel 8 we cannot guarantee that we will keep your mom for 10 days so you and your girlfriend can go on vacation.

OMG! Would someone who did something like that be facing abandonment charges?

Use only sex toys with a cord. Once you pass the anal sphincter ring there ain't no coming back unless you got a tether.

(Actually gave this recommendation last night to a patient) He appreciated it.
