Discharge orders you'd LIKE to write!!!

Hey, this quote from MLOS was in the middle of another thread:

"Maybe this is better suited to an ER thread, but here's a brief list of discharge instructions I would love to give some days:

1) ATVs & ETOH are bad.

2) Stop drinking a fifth of liquor each day - it's bad for you.

3) If you insist on OD-ing on your Klonopin, just take them all, DO NOT crush them & shoot them up w/your heroin.

4) If you go looking for a fight in a bar, you WILL find one.

:smackingf I could go on and on ..."

I think this is a great idea for a thread! I'd love to hear the responses from our ER nurses!!! :)

What about:

"THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH YOU. GO HOME."

OMG!! That is so funny! I wish we could use that one!!! :lol2:

Dropping your father (who's had a major stroke and cannot speak) off to the ER does not mean we cannot track you down (the family drops him off and leaves him when they want to go out of town.)

This is not Hotel 8 we cannot guarantee that we will keep your mom for 10 days so you and your girlfriend can go on vacation.

Seriously... this is the only way some of those poor caregivers can get any kind of break. Some suffer serious burnout or at least a serious lack of a life. Caregiver burnout is a commonly used medical diagnosis in our area that is heavily populated with elderly and infirm. It is common for an GP to admit a person such as this to a respite bed of even an acute bed. They would be considered ALC so the billing is not the same as an acute bed.

I discharged a patient a while back who had thrown himself into acute CHF after gorging on a nice salty Chinese buffet. Doc wrote in big letters on the discharge form under Special dietary instructions "NO CHINESE!!!"

The homeless man was a child once who didn't PLAN to grow up and be a homeless drunk. Alcoholism IS a disease and so is mental illness.

Hating oneself so much that they actually put a gun to their head and pull the trigger is a tragedy - the comment about not doing it properly was cruel.

I hope to god I am never an ER patient for any reason that could be "annoying" to the nurses.

Call me an idealist, or a party pooper

yet I had to put in my 2 cents

This has to be one of the best "venting" threads I have seen. Yeh we might be a bit inappropriate but we are doing something healthy. Venting with those who understand what we are talking about.

Do I feel sorry for the people who drive us nuts? Absolutely, I am so glad I am not in their place.

When we see something bizarre we need to try to rationalize...think of this as a kind of brain storming. What is shared in here can actually be helpful to someone who encounters a simular situation. More teaching for our patients is one that comes to mind.

We need to be more supportive of each other...nursing is a tough profession as we see so much 'bad stuff'.

Oh yeh and the comment on lack of compassion, if we were not compassionate we wouldn't care so much that this stuff bothers us and we wouldnt need a place to vent.

and might I add my own discharge order?

Please continue with your current lack of preventive health as it is job security for me.
