mandatory flu shot

Nurses COVID

Published

More and more hospitals are making the flu shot mandatory. Seasoned nurses are being threatened to lose their jobs if they do not take it or they are forced to wear a mask while doing patient care for the entire flu season. Is this a violation of HIPPA. Patients will know that that nurse has not had a flu shot when they see the mask. Do you think that the flu shot should be mandatory or should nurses have the right to refuse just like the patients have a right to refuse?

Well, surprise surprise. If you want to read about the study "completed by Cochrane Collaboration" referenced in the post above, you are not going to find it by clicking on the link provided by the poster.

Shocker.

I always refuse the shot and have to wear a mask. I call it "the mask of shame and punishment" because that's what it feels like. Patients will ask me why I'm wearing a mask, or they ask me if I'm sick. Then I have to explain how I didn't get the flu vaccine and blah, blah, blah.

Good for your employer. I completely support publicly shaming as much as legally possible healthcare professionals who refuse to take basic, commonsense steps to protect their clients from dangerous illnesses. You have a right to refuse the shot. Your employer has the right to publicly shame you for that. Choices have consequences.

FACT: A study completed by the independent Cochrane Collaboration groupshowed that the influenza vaccine offers very little protection, and that using the vaccinein healthy persons was basically useless. (2)

From what I can find, the Cochrane Collaboration does NOT conduct research studies. Therefore, I'll be generous and say that the wording of this is completely disingenuous, particularly since the link provided to support the declaration that the "vaccine in healthy persons is basically useless" doesn't even work.

You guys are ridiculous. Really? True social bullies is what you all are. I leave one place and you feel the need to follow me? Can't get enough I guess huh? I really hope people aren't misled by your childish games and the way you portray yourselves as if you know everything. You act like you are never wrong. Back off!

Here is the study. I would think that such scholars as yourselves could easily search for it just as I did by the title. You didn't. Instead you would rather come on over here and act like fools. Don't you have anything better to do with your time instead of scouring the boards for your next victim. Pathetic.

And I might add that YES, Cochrane does conduct research studies...believe it or not.

Andi, I see you are on another thread giving incorrect information again.

"What flu viruses does this season's vaccine protect against?

Flu vaccines are designed to protect against the main flu viruses that research suggests will be the most common during the upcoming season. Three kinds of flu viruses commonly circulate among people today: influenza A (H1N1) viruses, influenza A (H3N2) viruses, and influenza B viruses.

All of the 2014-2015 influenza vaccine is made to protect against the following three viruses:

  • an A/California/7/2009 (H1N1)pdm09-like virus
  • an A/Texas/50/2012 (H3N2)-like virus
  • a B/Massachusetts/2/2012-like virus."

The flu vaccine has been tied to reimbursement, because it has been shown as way to effectively decrease hospital admissions and mortality rates.

"Misconceptions about Flu Vaccine Effectiveness

Are there really benefits to getting a flu vaccine?

While how well the flu vaccine works can vary, there are a lot of reasons to get a flu vaccine each year.

  • Flu vaccination can keep you from getting sick from flu. Protecting yourself from flu also protects the people around you who are more vulnerable to serious flu illness.
  • Flu vaccination can help protect people who are at greater risk of getting seriously ill from flu, like older adults, people with chronic health conditions and young children (especially infants younger than 6 months old who are too young to get vaccinated).
  • Flu vaccination also may make your illness milder if you do get sick.
  • Flu vaccination can reduce the risk of more serious flu outcomes, like hospitalizations and deaths.
    • A recent study* showed that flu vaccine reduced children's risk of flu-related pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) admission by 74% during flu seasons from 2010-2012.
    • One study showed that flu vaccination was associated with a 71% reduction in flu-related hospitalizations among adults of all ages and a 77% reduction among adults 50 years of age and older during the 2011-2012 flu season.
    • Flu vaccination is an important preventive tool for people with chronic health conditions. Vaccination was associated with lower rates of some cardiac events among people with heart disease, especially among those who had had a cardiac event in the past year. Flu vaccination also has been shown to be associated with reduced hospitalizations among people with diabetes (79%) and chronic lung disease (52%).
    • Vaccination helps protect women during pregnancy and their babies for up to 6 months after they are born. One study showed that giving flu vaccine to pregnant women was 92% effective in preventing hospitalization of infants for flu.
    • Other studies have shown that vaccination can reduce the risk of flu-related hospitalizations in older adults. A study that looked at flu vaccine effectiveness over the course of three flu seasons estimated that flu vaccination lowered the risk of hospitalizations by 61% in people 50 years of age and older."

Misconceptions about Seasonal Flu and Flu Vaccines | Seasonal Influenza (Flu) | CDC

The influenza vaccine like all vaccines has been rigorously tested and has continuous post-marketing testing done ever year.

It's not incorrect! It's my opinion and what I know to be the case where I work. I don't care about your links. I wasn't responding to you was I? Now leave me alone!

You guys are ridiculous. Really? True social bullies is what you all are. I leave one place and you feel the need to follow me? Can't get enough I guess huh?

You are clearly either a troll or a true narcissist. I know I have followed this thread from the time it was first started as have most of the people still posting on it. In fact, my first post is on page 1 of this thread.

GET OVER YOURSELF. No one is "following you."

And I might add that YES, Cochrane does conduct research studies...believe it or not.

First of all, when you make an assertion and back it up with a link which does not work, THAT's ON YOU. We should not have to do our own research to see if a statement you have made is true. YOU should provide that information. More evidence that you have no clue about evaluating the literature.

Not surprisingly, the link you have provided above does not lead to any information whatsoever!

It's pathetic, really.

If Cochrane Collaboration conducted a research study which concluded that giving the flu shot to healthy individuals was useless, and you use that fact as an argument in your post, you should be able to provide a link which takes us directly to that research study so we can read it. Not a link to a search function, but a link taking us directly to the study in question.

Cochrane does meta-analyses. They do not conduct their own independent studies, as far as I know. They review existing RTCs and compile data.

That's what I was able to ascertain about them. They provide a place to review the literature.

Andi, it doesn't matter if you were replying directly to me or not. This is an open forum. I refuse to let willfully incorrect vaccine information go unchallenged on this forum or any other forum I am member of. I consider your views on vaccines as dangerous to the public. Your views and people with similar views are why we haven't eradicated polio and are seeing a resurgence of vaccine preventable diseases/illnesses in the United States and abroad.
