Direct Entry MSN's 2010

Published

Just curious if anyone who has applied to the Direct Entry MSN programs at UMASS Worcester, MGH, or Northeastern for Fall 2010 has been contacted about interviews or received word either way yet? I know the deadlines aren't until this week but just wondering if anyone sent their applications in early has heard anything. Thanks!

Wow, that's much higher than last year. I was told by the Director during the information session last year that they received about 160 applications for 50 spots for the class commencing Sept 2009.

My informal survey last year left me with the impression that Simmon's Direct Entry MSN program was easier to get in to than the other Boston Direct Entries. You don't want to call a program that accepts 1 out of 3 applications a "safe school," but comparatively it was. If applications are truly up to 288, much less 400, then this is certainly no longer true.

I hear ya...

but I was told that last year they had almost 400 applicants too? So weird how conflicting the information is... its slightly messing with my head, I have to admit.

Dunno what to say! Who exactly did you get the information from, the person answering the phone?

There were 150+ in the informations session when I asked the question. I think it was the April 09 session. The Director--forget her name--gave a fairly lengthy introduction on who she was, what National boards she was a member of, what books she had authored, where she summered, some sort of Yale connection, etc (yeah, yeah, it kinda turned me off). If the acceptance rate is really important to you, I'd PM some of the folks that have ID'd themselves as current Simmons students. They could probably get you an accurate number.

Betcha I've got the real 411, though.

(Good luck)

I just got my acceptance to Simmons in the mail today, not sure if they are all sent out at once or in rounds depending on when applications were sent in (I sent mine in first week in January). I received my acceptance to Northeastern a few weeks ago and their deadline for deposits for acceptance were due yesterday - which is maybe why they haven't sent out rejection/waitlist letters yet because they were waiting to see how many spots they still had open? Northeastern was my first choice so I wasn't disappointed that Simmons took so long to mail acceptance letters, but I know it must be frustrating to have to make the decision to put in your deposit to not your first choice, or wait on the possibility of being accepted to your top choice. I've been to the open houses at Simmons, MGH, and Northeastern and they all seem to say they get around 300 applications a year, although I wouldn't be surprised if it was more this year because of the economy.

I don't have enough posts to send private messages back :( but for those who were asking the envelope for the Simmons letter was actually small, regular size, and it only had four pages to it. It was dated the 19th and probably only was delivered to me so quick because I live in Boston. It also says that there are 50 spaces available in the entering class. Hope this helps and good luck to everyone waiting to hear back!

good to know JayMay! I would have assumed a small letter was a rejection letter!!

hi

i just got accepted to the northeastern program and i am trying to figure out how much the whole program is going to cost and i cant seem to find one set number. does anyone have any idea?

thanks

Is anyone else still waiting to hear from Northeastern? Does anyone have an idea of when we might actually be notified, if at all?

I already received my rejection letter from them. You might want to call if you haven't heard anything.

Sacksr -

Northeastern's program is appr. $12355 for the first four terms. After that you work for about 6-9 months as an RN (hopefully! since the Boston job market for new RN's isn't too bright). During this time you pay no tuition, but get paid as a nurse! The last two years you pay per credit. The cost is currently $1065 per credit. Most programs range from 43-48 credits for the final two years. I have calculated my tuition and fees to cost about $98,000 at NEU. :crying2: It's so much money, but I'm hoping to do the last 2 years part time (which will extend it to 3 years) and continue to work as a nurse while I finish the program. This way I can hopefully get tuition reimbursement from wherever I'm working and be able to pay for some of my tuition as I go with my income. That's of course the best case scenario, but all I can do is dive in and see what happens! If you end up at Northeastern, I'll look forward to seeing you in the fall!

Anyone else receive anything from Simmons? How do people feel about the Simmons program?

I think any of the programs discussed is a fine option. Some put more emphasis on the nurse training (like NE, Simmons, UMass Med--all of these programs require work as a nurse), while others see it as a stepping stone to the NP (Boston College, to a lesser extend MGH--they don't require working as a nurse, but many students do it during the program). I have a choice of three of these programs, and for me, it's coming down to cost, the program's enthusiasm about having me as a student, and the scheduling for my kids' school/child care situation. I am confident that each program offers strong academics.
