Direct Entry MSN's 2010

Published

Just curious if anyone who has applied to the Direct Entry MSN programs at UMASS Worcester, MGH, or Northeastern for Fall 2010 has been contacted about interviews or received word either way yet? I know the deadlines aren't until this week but just wondering if anyone sent their applications in early has heard anything. Thanks!

Sorry it took so long for me to see this and get back to you! I am from Boston but I have spent a lot of time in the Worcester area over the past year. I absolutely LOVE the campus and the faculty so far, very helpful and seem to care a lot about success of their students. I've also talked to a few current students and they love the GEP program. I guess the GEP students are pretty close knit from what I hear- especially those who end up in clinical w/ each other. When I heard that I was like *whew*. What program did you apply for? Not sure if you've ever been to MA, but Let me know if you have any questions about Worcester. To be honest, I don't like it as much as Boston, but the cost of living is slightly cheaper. I should warn you, make sure you will have access to a car-- public transportation is extremely minimal! Hope this helps at all.

look forward to hearing from you!

Katie W,

I applied to the Acute Critical Care NP track. I went to visit last week over my spring break and loved it and sent in my deposit. I do have access to a car, and I got the impression that a lot of the students live in Shrewsbury. Are you planning on moving to the area or know anything about apartments there? Thanks!

Hi everyone, I've been reading these threads for a couple months now and decided to finally join! I've been accepted to UMass, MGH, and Regis and have decided to go to UMass! The faculty and program itself seem amazing, and the instate tuition alone is difficult to pass up. I also love the fact they employ us as RN for 500 hours during our second year, I definitely want all the experience I can get before entering the "real world." I'm in the Adult Primary Care track, is anyone else?

As far as the living situation goes, I currently live in Boston but will be relocating to metrowest (preferably Natick). My fiancee works in Cambridge, so we need to find a happy medium. If anyone else is looking to move to Natick, it's about 20 miles from the UMass Worcester campus, a straight shot down route 9. Natick has a ton to offer, including the Natick Collection (awesome shopping!), a cute downtown area, as well as a rural section. It's just 20 mins from Boston and close to Wellesley, Needham, etc. We have been able to find some reasonable apartments/condos in Natick, but as far as cost goes, Framingham many be a little cheaper (one town west and closer to Worcester/Shrewsbury). For anyone looking for somewhere to live, I highly recommend looking in this area if you don't mind a half hour drive (admittedly, it might be a little further than some people would like).

I can't wait to meet everyone! So excited!

Hey Cassie,

I am planning to live in Worcester a 5 min. drive from the hospital campus (10- 15 min from Shrewsbury Campus). I didn't really do any apartment searches in the area because I'm moving into my boyfriends house. From what I've heard, apartments are generally around the same price depending on how many roommates you plan on having. What's nice about the house is that there is a driveway and a bunch of parking on the street (generally hard to come by with apartments Worcester, especially if they're downtown). Plus the house is in a fairly quiet and safe neighborhood compared to a lot of housing in Worcester.

Does anyone else suspect that Northeastern didn't even read their application? I assume I'm being rejected, since I didn't get an interview and those accepted have apparently gotten their letters. At this point, I would rather get a "we're sorry to inform you" letter than feel like my application got stuck in admissions office limbo and I wasted $50, not to mention what I paid for transcripts, my own time, and that of my letter writers. I already have a deposit in at another program, but I'd just like to know the fate of the rest of my applications for my own satisfaction.

LewisNClark, I had recently spoken to someone who went through the process last year with applying and she said that she never even heard back from Northeastern at all either. Not a letter, phone call, email, nothing. She said she knew a few people who they did that to. I didnt apply there so I dont know but wanted to share that I had heard they do that..

Oh my God. My suspicions confirmed! I told my long suffering spouse that if I don't hear from them by the end of April, I will be very tempted to call and demand my $50 back! This process is making me insane.

LewisNClark-

I emailed the head of the program at Northeastern a few weeks to check on the status of my application. She responded and said she would check and get back to me. I received an email from her last night telling me I was not accepted. They have been good at getting back to me via email so you may want to try that route. Good luck!

I might do that. Since they even have their waitlist notification out, I know I'm not on their list--and I've already accepted at UMass, which I love--but I would like to have confirmation that a human being has looked at my application! Thanks!

It would be nice for them to at least have the courtesy to inform people whether or not they are accepted. It's not hard to send out a group email and blind copy everyone.

I have heard nothing at all from Northeastern either. By reading last year's message board, the process was really bad for them too. I bet they didn't even review our applications, but will claim we were "not accepted" so they do not have to return our deposit. Grrrrr!!!

I just spoke with the coordinator for NEU and they are "finalizing decisions this week". If you weren't offered an interview, you were not a candidate for the program. She was very nice though and told me over the phone that I was denied. Oh well, at least I can move on with my life now!

@cam2006 -- I heard via email from the program coordinator. I had emailed her asking for an ETA on decisions being mailed, as I had the MGH offer to accept or decline before April 1 (I didn't mention MGH specifically). So she gave me the info via email. But I don't think that is standard practice on their part; she and I had been in touch on a number of questions and I think she was being nice in accommodating my timeframe.

I did interview at NEU, and emailed back indicating that I wanted to stay on waitlist until I send MGH my cash. (All about the cash!). Good luck!
