Direct Entry MSN's 2010
Got my acceptance letter in the mail this past Friday. I would love to go to Simmons because the campus is awesome and the faculty/professors all seem really great. My only drawback is that it is so expensive. therefore, I'll be going to Umass med instead.

Best route to FNP
mom2twinsplus1, not sure if this if your post was directed to me or not, but I am going to Umass Worcester in the fall for their GEP program. The prereqs. are a bachelors degree in any field, plus Anatomy 1 &2, Micro, stats and 2 social science courses. The first year is to prepare you to take the NCLEX for your RN (they do not award you a BSN, just a certificate of completion). Once you finish that, you work as a Nurse while you take MSN classes for the remaining 2 years. They have a few pathways, FNP being one of them. Once you finish you can take your boards for FNP. Hope this helps.

Hey Cassie, I am planning to live in Worcester a 5 min. drive from the hospital campus (10- 15 min from Shrewsbury Campus). I didn't really do any apartment searches in the area because I'm moving into my boyfriends house. From what I've heard, apartments are generally around the same price depending on how many roommates you plan on having. What's nice about the house is that there is a driveway and a bunch of parking on the street (generally hard to come by with apartments Worcester, especially if they're downtown). Plus the house is in a fairly quiet and safe neighborhood compared to a lot of housing in Worcester.

mkbarry099, I am starting an accel. FNP prorgam this fall. it takes 3 years for those without a nursing degree. I'll have my BS in pre-med this spring. I WISH I went to nursing school instead of wasting my time doing another degree. Health Science degrees may prepare you academically, but not clinically. Luckily I have some experience as a CNA so it probably won't be such culture- shock to me, but I still wish I had been gathering experience all along as a Nurse before going for my NP. I say get your BSN and then make decisions about NP.

careerchanger22, No you were right, Feb. 1st is when they began to review not March 1st. Sorry, Typo. But yeah they said that there were already around 150 applicants when I dropped off my app. the Friday before Feb. 1st. I think that is a lot considering they don't accept too many. I was told about 50 get in. I have heard great things about that program and I currently take a class there. I really love the campus and the faculty is pretty great, too. Good Luck!

Sorry it took so long for me to see this and get back to you! I am from Boston but I have spent a lot of time in the Worcester area over the past year. I absolutely LOVE the campus and the faculty so far, very helpful and seem to care a lot about success of their students. I've also talked to a few current students and they love the GEP program. I guess the GEP students are pretty close knit from what I hear- especially those who end up in clinical w/ each other. When I heard that I was like *whew*. What program did you apply for? Not sure if you've ever been to MA, but Let me know if you have any questions about Worcester. To be honest, I don't like it as much as Boston, but the cost of living is slightly cheaper. I should warn you, make sure you will have access to a car-- public transportation is extremely minimal! Hope this helps at all. look forward to hearing from you!

I asked simmons via e-mail when we should hear by.. they are hoping for the end of March, but do not have a definite date. They did not start reviewing applications until March 1st and the receptionist told me that there are only 2 people reviewing everything. They said they had accumulated around 150 apps, so it would take a while.. SO annoying especially because I was accepted to Umass last month, and they gave me 3 weeks to make a decision. Umass was my first choice, so I already sent in the deposit, but it would have been terrible if I was undecided. I heard that some people have been accepted to Northeastern but I am not sure if all the candidates have been notified.

Umass Worcester GEP!! Please reply!
LewisnClark, I am going into the FNP program in the Fall as well. I know the anxiety you are feeling! The faculty at the info sessions sort of made it seem like you would have absolutely no life, but I've been in contact w/ a current student and she absolutely loves it. She says that there are those people that HAVE to study every second of the day and get all A's, but there are also people who spend time on themselves and with friends and do just fine in the program. One thing Briang30 didn't mention that I thought you might like to know is that for the first year, most of the classes are at the Shrewsbury campus. I'd say its about 10-15 min away from the main campus. I hope that doesn't complicate your commute! My friend in the program also said that clinical is the best part of the week, so 6:30 isn't as horrible as it seems! Lab is one day every other week and I could be remembering wrong, but I think I was told it is 4 hrs long.

I got a call from Umass about a week after my interview, my acceptance package came in the mail after the holiday weekend. Did you have an interview a week ago or receive a call from them?
