At my ED they offer 11a-11:30p, 3p-3:30a (my favorite), 7p-7:30a and we re trialing a 5p-5:30a shift. I recommend that you just get your foot in the door and start working, you can always switch shifts, that is how I have determined that I like the 3p shift the best. Good luck. ER is amazing.
I work 11-2330. It's hands down the busiest shift in our ER. You step on the floor & start running & don't stop till your shift is over. There is rarely any downtime on this shift but I love it! I'm not a morning person & I could never adapt to night shift. My shifts fly by, I see and learn A LOT, and I tend to get the best sleep on this shift. Up late & sleep in. :) I know a lot of people hate this shift bc it takes up their whole day...but seriously, 12 hour shifts no matter what time they are take up your whole day! We also have 12-0030, 1300-0130 and 3-0330 shifts avail. Good luck!
It really varies a ton. In 3 ERs, I've seen 7-7, 7-3, 11-7, 11-11, 10-10, 1-1, 2-2, 3-3, 5-5, 10-6, 4-2.... I first started working 3-3 off orientation because there wasn't a ton of competition for the shift and that's how I discovered I love night shift (switched to 7p-7a after a few months of 3-3). The mid day shifts are definitely the busiest, so between 10a-2a ime. I love being busy, but having coverage for lunch breaks is important for me- I need to eat and sit for 30 minutes routinely. Whether this is something I can expect or not has more to do with overall staffing and culture ime than shift.
I work 7P-7A, but we have 1P-1A, 3P-3A, and some work 7P-2A. We can also technically pick up a shift at any time, so some people may work 7P-3A or 7P-11P (or 7A-3P, 7A-11A), pick up 4 hours at any time, 8 hours at any time, or anything, really. The ER always needs help so they are very flexible. My manager is trying to get more of the night shift staff to start working 3P-3A or 4P-4A which I am not opposed to at all. :)

Yup, this is exactly what I would have posted. 11-23 is my favorite also! Home in time to sleep for the night and you don't have to get up early. Plus the shifts go by so fast! Love it :)

Hi all. I have an interview for an ED position next week, and don't know what shift(s) they have open. I know there are usually different shifts there vs. the standard 7-7 for floor nursing. Would any of you recommend one shift over another, and why?
Thanks ahead of time-
