I feel like this happens often at my work. You actually explained it perfectly. Sometimes I feel guilty that I get 'annoyed' by it but I'm glad I'm not the only one.
  2. I work in the east bay. I have many classmates that got hired in the north bay and they make just slightly less then me. From what I hear, Kaiser pays the most. Even with the cost of living in California I live very comfortably. Don't sell yourself short but also don't set your expectations too high. You will eventually get what you are looking for:)
  3. I was in your position last year. I looked for a job for 10 months after graduated (i have some classmates that are still looking). I landed an ER position and it happened to be the easiest interview I had. I think that it had a little to do with luck and a lot to do with hard work. I made it a part time job looking for work. I finally started making phone calls to the director of every emergency department in California. I happened to speak to my now boss, set up an interview for the next week and hired on the spot. It happened like that for about 5 other people at my work but a couple of people I know weren't so lucky. We are now on a hiring freeze. I say just call, call and keep calling. Once I expanded my job search I was offered a clerical RN position and a position at a SNF but of course I took the ED position. You WILL find something. Just try to stay motivated and remember to relax and have fun once in awhile. The right job will come along. Good luck:)
  4. At my ED they offer 11a-11:30p, 3p-3:30a (my favorite), 7p-7:30a and we re trialing a 5p-5:30a shift. I recommend that you just get your foot in the door and start working, you can always switch shifts, that is how I have determined that I like the 3p shift the best. Good luck. ER is amazing.
  5. I'm a new grad beginning my first job as an ER RN and I enjoyed reading this post. I had one instructor tell me, the only time that question is stupid is when you don't ask. I have heard from many nurses that they aren't scared of anything more then a new nurse that doesn't ask questions. I'm glad you asked about this. I do have a question... I have always thought that if a patient is satting fine but the H&H is in the toilet then the sat really isn't that helpful at that instant. The rationale is if the H&H is 1/2 of what is should be but all are saturated with 02 then of course your going to get a decent sat BUT they don't have enough RBC's to adequately oxygenate the rest of their body. Is that correct?
  6. I personally think that $23/hr is insulting HOWEVER it is better then nothing. I have been working in a SNF for 3 weeks making $30 and was just offered a hospital position starting at $53/hr, day shift with ADN degree. The first job I accepted was in a clinic making $21/hr, I quit on my 3rd shift. I felt I was selling myself short and it was the best decision I've made. Gool luck:)
  7. Im in northern CA, I worked at a SNF Making $30/hr an recently accepted a position as a SN1 in an ED for $50+/hr! Pay in CA is great but the cost of living is high.
