Hello all- Just curious...what did your docs do for your floor on the holidays? Did you do anything for your Docs on the holidays? (other than work your rear ends off :))
Do you feel like your Docs should recognize your work on the holidays? Or some other day?
Our Docs gave us Christmas cards (some did anyhow) Generic that said "Happy Holidays," to the floor.
Last year some got us fruit baskets, some cookies or some homemade fudge. I think we got a fruit basket or two this year.
We work so hard for them and if it werent for us they would only know what is going on with the patient for the 5 minutes they are with them in a day. I think that it would be nice to be recognized in some way at least once a year, but then again I dont do anything for them (other than give the best care to their patients that I can).
How do you feel?
I don't recall that I've ever gotten gifts from physicians I work with at the holidays. I don't expect to, and I don't particularly want to. It's a professional relationship, not a personal one.
It's much more important and meaningful to me that I be treated with courtesy and respect every day through the year, than whether I get some kind of arbitrary gesture on a major holiday.
I feel the same about management and Nurses' Week -- treat me like a valued employee all year, and you can skip the "rubber chicken" luncheon for Nurses' Week ...
We got some fruit baskets, peanuts, cookies and candy along with cards. Not all of the docs do something, mostly it is from the groups. We didn't get any popcorn tins this year though, which is odd cause we usually get two or three.
I certainly don't expect anything, but I do appreciate the gifts. I always make cookies and candies for staff to enjoy on my unit during the holiday and they are definitely my collegues! I know they appreciate it, as long as I don't bring anything after Jan. 1 that is! It's left out on trays where anyone can (and they do) help themselves, from our nurses and doctors to staff from other units walking by on break. It's not at all unusual for management to run around telling other floors about the goodies and people show up to say hello and grab a treat.
Our postpartum unit is split between two floors, which makes any kind of gift giving a challenge.
Nevertheless, a group of docs go in together every year and provide lovely HoneyBaked hams, really good bread, gourmet mustard, and boxes and boxes of the best cocoa dusted chocolate truffles I have ever enjoyed.
The miracle is that they provide a box containing these items for each shift (conspicuously labeled) on BOTH floors. For those of you keeping track, that's SIX boxes of wonderful treats.
We appreciate their kindness immensely, and six lucky folks get to go home with a meaty hambone to make soup with.
Yummmm!
Our docs are very good at letting us know how much they appreciate us. For the holidays, they host a Christmas party, send us lunch during the week, and give us sinfully decadent treats to snack on. A few of our docs give each member of their specialty team $50 gift certificates. One surgeon in particular gives us each a handwritten Christmas card with a line or two about specific care that we delivered for a specific case. We feel very appreciated by them. The staff also give the surgeons a party during the holidays.
Well, if private practice you do work for them. I have owned my own buisness in the past so it bothers me not.But anyhoo, I always baked A LOT throughout the holidays for the office. Also got good at some sort of thoughtful gag gift for the Doc (examples of which I won't mention here, even tho I'd love you all to know my creative awesomeness at gag gift giving - which should put all MDs who get to know me on alert. I will find a way to hilite every story of childhood fear or adult weakness that you might have told me...

OMG! SOOOOO funny! I do this too. One resident told me that he had a fear of Raggedy Ann when he was little, so as a joke, I dressed up a Raggedy Ann doll in Santa clothes, put it on the OR table and pulled a sheet over it. I told him that he needed to talk to the patient before he started to scrub because she had a last minute question. He was laughing so hard that he couldn't stand up straight! We also filled a stocking full of every single prep solution (this particular surgeon uses everything in the house...Hibiclens, alcohol, betadine scrub, paint and duraprep.) and hung it in his OR.
I think we are really blessed at my facility. Our docs do the normal cookies/fruits/etc as well. One surgeon buys the entire nursing staff lunch from a nice restaurant for 2 days--so if you work one of those two days, it's nice. If you're off, sorry about your luck, LOL! I think it is a really nice gesture though!
Our ER docs gave our ER staff really nice large bags with a travel coffee mug.
Nope. However, the facility management always ensure that the Doctors who have patients at our facility get fruit baskets....I think it's just to keep the referals coming!! The facility management do not care about us "peons" and have made it very plain over the years. If an employee wants to attend the Christmas party....a ticket has to be purchased!!

Oh, I know that practice! My company spends thousands each year on gifts for the doctors, but at least they give their staff gift vouchers for about a twentieth of that value...
However, I derive some consolation from the knowledge that all these gifts come from shady importers, and afterwards listening to the Drs moaning about how quickly they fell apart
If doctors are around, we welcome them to join us and have a chat for our holiday potluck gatherings. Some do, some don't, some seem uncomfortable taking from the nurses. Why would a doctor ever owe me a gift?? Do you buy gifts for you CNA's? They both deal with and clean up the crap we don't want to-and for way less pay. (Sound familiar?)
Our doctors do recognize us for the most part, in their own way, lol..
We get different docs several times a year because a new group of them rotates thru our unit every 3-4 months..
Many of the docs like to make and bring cookies, candy, cheesecake, whatever they are good at making to our parties....We love to recognize birthdays, newly certified nurses, holidays, etc :) We have had docs that brought us goodies just because they felt like it :)

I have brought CNAs Starbucks just as a nice thing to do.. I would much prefer to be able to think of each other once in a while, it does make work better. This comes from my general good will to all men/women attitude that I have been brought up with. Remember nursing is my second career, so I am not naturally going to be upset or put out if someone does me a kindness...

The docs that cover our hospice IPU took us all (all 3 shifts) out to a nice restaurant for luncheon. They are also great to work with and recognize our contribution to patient care every day!
