When I started nursing school, I thought I would hate LTC. I never pictured myself working there. I was just going to hope clinicals in the nursing home would fly by then we would go to the hospital. I was in for a surprise. I fell in love with the nursing home. It only took me about two weeks to realize this is were I wanted to work.
Seriously wanted to to peds (like, seriously) and I HATED cardiac. HATED it.
Now I work in a cardiac ER. We see almost zero kids, and a LOT of cardiac (obviously).
You can't rule anything out, honestly. It was always a joke with everybody that you would end up working in whatever subject you hated. Held true for a lot of people!
Ps- forgot to put that I actually really like my job! Haha
When you were in nursing school, did you already know what area of nursing you wanted to work in before you got your adn/bsn? And how did you decided what area you wanted to work in?thanks.
I knew I wanted to do emergency nursing. The constant shifting of priorities, not knowing what you are going to be dealing with when you first get the patient, having to be a jack of all trades, being able to handle crises all appealed to me.
While in LPN school I already knew I would end up in LTC. I thought I would hate it but I actually don't. I'm in love with my residents. They light up my world.
On the other hand- My true passion is LD, post-partum, nursery , and Peds. If I can do any of these I would be ever so grateful.
I graduate from ADN ( hopefully), in Dec. I plan on applying to these specialties once getting RN degree .
I was not a big fan of any of my clinical rotations by when I was able to observe in the OR for the first time I was hooked. Every opportunity in nursing school to observe in the OR I took. Unfortunately my school did not have an OR rotation, but after I graduated I got a job in the OR and I LOVE MY JOB. The operating room is the place for me!
I went into nursing school not having a clue what I wanted to do but knew that I would not work in LTC (bad experience as a girl scout LOL). During nursing school thought I would like either labor and delivery or psych. Got out of school during mid 1990s when hosp weren't hiring, ended up taking a position in LTC on midnight shift because I needed money. I fell completely in love with LTC and have been there ever since. I've had many different positions in LTC but can't imagine ever wanting to work anywhere else :)
