Isn't nursing just sooo much fun? Rewarding?!!!

Fun, well, I'm not so sure but occasionally it can be very rewarding but I have to say those times are getting fewer and fewer as the years go by and the patients and their families are getting more demanding and unappreciate than ever before.

New Nurse here....floated to geriatrics M/S unit...5 pts, Yahoo!!! One was Hospice told me I know the end is near....I asked her did she know the Lord, replied I don't know, I ask her do you want to pray, she said yes I do. I explained what she needed to do to be saved, and prayed with her. After we prayed she looked at me & said I will be ok. I had cold chills, & cried w/her. It just cannot get any better than this!

I am having a real knee jerk reaction to your note. I know you meant well in your heart but I feel you 'led the witness' projecting your own beliefs system on her. In asking her if she knew the Lord, wanted to pray, how to be saved...you automatically assumed she believed as you. What if she had been Jewish, Hindu, athiest?

It is not your place to assume each pt will have a religious belief as you. It would have been more appropriate to ask "What can I do to help you? What would bring you comfort at the time? Are there any special things you might like - ie. prayer, visit to a chaplain, music, etc." and then let her answers guide you.

As a CHPLN, Certified Hospice & Paliative Care Licensed Nurse, I respect each and every one of my pt's beliefs or lack of beliefs. It's all intensely personal, nor more so that at the end of life.

Please learn these differences - and you will become a very compassionate and caring, supportive nurse.
