Hi,
I am currently a sophomore student at The Ohio State University. As a freshman last year, I was denied acceptance into the program. This year, I decided to reapply, but also apply to many other schools in order to give myself some options. I have applied to OSU, Mt. Carmel, Otterbein, San Francisco, Cincinnatti, and Florida. I was denied from Mt. Carmel's advanced placement, Otterbein, and San Francisco. I really do not want to go to Cincy, unless I have no other options. I am still waiting to hear back from Florida and OSU, however since both programs are very competitive, I doubt I will get in. I have a 3.5 gpa, am a state tested nurse's aide, and have lots of work and volunteer experience. I am lost.. I have no idea what to do from here. I want to either stay in Columbus, OH or transfer to a school in a warmer place, such as Florida. Can anyone offer me any advice? I never thought I would be in this situation, again. I have also considered applying to more nursing schools now to give me some more options, but it is already May, therefore many deadlines have passed. I have looked into switching my major, but I am not interested in doing that. I know what I want to do with my life, and that is become a nurse. I am so confused. Any help, advice, or thoughts would be much appreciated!!
I feel for you. The nursing programs are so competitive that's it's mind blowing. I would suggest to get the GPA up if you want to be choosy. You know that your GPA is more like average and the other's are close to 3.7 and over. If you don't get into cincy re-take a couple classes and really work hard to get that score up. It will make a difference.
It's always easier to go down then to get the GPA up; flashcards are my thing. On the toilet seat, by the bed stand, in the kitchen...oops, am I telling everyone how obsessed I was during school (lol).
If you think this is hard try taking the boards; and you will, have faith.
If you get cincy take it and bite the bullet, earn your degree and live. You might even like it. Throwing lots of good karma your way.
Don't be discouraged! The reason the schools require such a high GPA is NOT that you need that high of a GPA to be successful in nursing school (not to say that it's not academically challenging). It's simply because there is a shortage of nursing instructors (very little financial incentive to teach), which creates a shortage of available student spots in school. That's why it is so overly competitive to get in. But once you're in, you're in. So keep trying!
i love the city of cincinnati! don't be so quick to write it off. uc is located in clifton, which is a neat section of cinci. i have family there and have spent quite a lot of time there. if you end up going there,
pm or email me and i'll connect you with my cousin and she can tell you what's where. she graduated from uc.
I'm confused. Will you be a sophomore or a junior for '11-'12? If you're a sophomore, then just stay where you are, keep taking nursing pre-reqs and reapply. Many schools don't start nursing classes until your junior year anyway.
If you're a rising junior, then... what everyone else said. :)

So have you been accepted to Cincy then? If so, wait to hear back from Florida and OSU and then, if it's a "no", bite the bullet and go to Cincy. (unless I'm misinterpreting and you weren't accepted there?). Even if you're not crazy about Cincinnatti, why not put up with living there a few years to get the degree you want, and then apply for jobs where you really want to live after you graduate?
Apologies if I've misunderstood. In that case, I'd agree with advice you've gotten from others -- cast a wider net by applying to more schools and meanwhile do what you can to increase your GPA.
Good luck!
