Denied from nursing schools

Published

Hi,

I am currently a sophomore student at The Ohio State University. As a freshman last year, I was denied acceptance into the program. This year, I decided to reapply, but also apply to many other schools in order to give myself some options. I have applied to OSU, Mt. Carmel, Otterbein, San Francisco, Cincinnatti, and Florida. I was denied from Mt. Carmel's advanced placement, Otterbein, and San Francisco. I really do not want to go to Cincy, unless I have no other options. I am still waiting to hear back from Florida and OSU, however since both programs are very competitive, I doubt I will get in. I have a 3.5 gpa, am a state tested nurse's aide, and have lots of work and volunteer experience. I am lost.. I have no idea what to do from here. I want to either stay in Columbus, OH or transfer to a school in a warmer place, such as Florida. Can anyone offer me any advice? I never thought I would be in this situation, again. I have also considered applying to more nursing schools now to give me some more options, but it is already May, therefore many deadlines have passed. I have looked into switching my major, but I am not interested in doing that. I know what I want to do with my life, and that is become a nurse. I am so confused. Any help, advice, or thoughts would be much appreciated!!

I would like to know what college! allows you to retake a class in which you "passed" with a C or B in order to replace an A. Grade forgiveness is only for D, WF, or F.

I earned a B+ in algebra in a community college and the professor said I was not ready to move on. So, I paid cash and retook it. I earned a B+. The last day of class I walked up to the teacher and said, "You have to be kidding!" I could not believe it. Really never needed algebra again except a few formulas for bachelor's statistics, master's quantitative analysis, and doctorate quant which I could of retrieved from a book or website.

Many years ago you could retake classes if it was a class you had taken under a certain number of credits. Do not know if that is the way it is now.

Speaking of Pittsburgh, there are a number of diploma schools where you could get your RN then finish your BSN later, sometimes in as little as 12 months. I can think of 3 diploma schools off the top of my head (UPMC Shadyside, UPMC St Margaret, Sewickley Valley Hosp). There were at least 3 other diploma programs when I applied to nursing school, but I don't know their status now. They also have a lot of ADN programs in the area and lots of BSN programs. I used to do the drive between Delaware OH and Pittsburgh in around 4 hours.

There are still diploma schools? None in this state...

Specializes in ICU, ER.

It is my honest opinion that you should stick to your guns at OSU, get a degree in another health science, then go for a BS to BSN accelerated program. Such programs are widely available in Big 10 schools. It will likely cost your much less than switching schools now, and it may even make you a better nurse in the long run. Quite frankly, the job market is soft, so school is a great place to be.

Your a good student. You can excel in nursing. Don't change destinations, just take a different route.

Yes there are several in Pittsburgh. UPMC has 3, St Margarets (where I am going), Shadyside, and Mercy. I'm not sure how things are with West Penn, they did have one, may still. There is Citizens, slightly north east of Pittsburgh.

Specializes in future OB/L&D nurse(I hope) or hospice.

The college I attend will allow you to take any pre-req up to 3 times and will only use the best grade received to calc GPA - Thank God.

Do you mean non college level courses like "Basic Algebra", "reading I,II" (which do not go into the degree GPA only "internal school GPA")

or are you saying your College allows for retake of "College Level" courses

Like e.g ..College Algebra, etc EVEN if you passed with a C or B?

Name the school...

No, I am talking ALL pre-reqs.. I have taken A&P more than once. I go to College of Sourthern Nevada. CSN.EDU

Specializes in Med-Surg, NICU.

I just got accepted into the OSU's nursing program.

My back up plan would have been to complete my undergrad and apply for an Accelerated BSN or try to apply for OSU's Master's program.

If you have exhausted your top options, including all nearby programs, I would consider stepping back, going through an LPN program, and getting an LPN license. An LPN license will improve your employability and could be the key to get you through the RN school door.

Specializes in Urology, ENT.

Don't be discouraged; it took me 2 years to get into a nursing program, and when I finally did, I hated where I was. I'm back in nursing school, but much closer to home, and my biggest regret was not having a backup plan so I'd have something to do while I wait to get accepted into a program such as getting another degree. I really wish I had at least a psych degree since there's so much psychology in nursing to begin with, and I had already taken so many psych classes.

Keep trying and keep expanding your search. I don't remember how many nursing schools I got rejected from before finally getting in, and I know what it's like to feel as if you'll never get in. The school I'm in now initially rejected me (they miscalculated my GPA) but accepted me a year and a half later. A really good family friend told me, "Don't feel bad -- there's some school out there that wants you."
