Curious, Why did you decide to become an RPN/LPN?

Published

I really wanted to go back to school (i never really did much education past high school when i was younger) but i always struggled with WHAT i wanted to go back for.

For many years I had people tell me i should become a nurse and i was very hesitant about pursuing it as an education and career path.

I researched different options and different careers i would be interested in but i kept coming back to nursing. i have quite a few friends who are nurses so i spoke with them about what they liked and disliked about their jobs and in the end i decided it was the right path for me to follow.

I'm very excited, and nervous, to start my RPN program in September.

I have two small children and i want to set a good example for them... so i better make sure i keep my grades up!! lol

Best wishes for much success! I became an LPN because it fit into my life at just the right moment. And I love what I do.

Let us know how it goes for you!

Congratulations on taking this step. I too went back to become an RPN with two small children. I had always wanted to become a nurse but life made me take the long way around. I was newly single and needed a way to give my kids a better life. It's been six years since I graduated and I have never regretted by decision.

Where are you going to school?

Edit to add, plus it's true- I had one B! Just one and i couldn't gain entrance to the ASN program. I still harbor fresh scars / wounds over that... I really gotta stop picking at it or it will never heal.

I'm still a pn student but my choice was either 4 years away from home to do a BSN or 2 years in my same town for LPN, I chose LPN.

In Canada they are 2 years. Mine was 5 semesters.

Mine was four academic semesters, also in Canada.

So why doesn't it result in an "associates of practical nursing"? Why is it still just a certification? Just curious.

It's not a certification, it's a diploma. We have no Associates degrees in Canada I don't think.Even when we used to have 2 year RN programs they were just diplomas, not degrees.
