Hi Nurses!

Lately I've been hearing so many great things about the VA hospital I would like to know what are your thoughts? Is anyone currently work there what is it like to work in the veterans affairs Hospital and what is the pay and the benefits like? Are there Perdiem opportunities? Thanks!

I've had a lot of coworkers leave for the VA as well.

My local VA has per-diem shifts but they don't hire specifically for them: they use staffing agencies to fill those needs.

VA threads are usually found under Military/Government nursing. :)

Love it. Have a good one, no scandals, we pass audits with flying colors. Don't believe everything the media tells you, they love to rip apart anything government-related (usually for good reason, LOL).

Never hire PD employees, though. You come on as full-time if you're a nurse; the famous Federal benefits are based on that, and there's a union (which is optional to join).

Do some searches and see what you find on AN. And welcome :)

I love working at the VA hospital . Benefits are good and pay is good in my opinion. Things are run a little different but every facility is different. What is in the need currently is not completely represented correctly so be careful of perception related to news.

I like my job at the VA, too. I work with a group of very committed people and am impressed w the professionalism I see. The time off is a big reason I took the job. So many jobs have just 3 weeks total PTO and I but I get about 7. I was looking for a new job but was unwilling to accept 3 weeks. Another job I had ( case management) gave 3 weeks but you couldn't get a 3 day weekend unless you asked for it 6 or 9 months ahead and they would only allow 2 off at a time.

The only thing is that it is an absolute pain to apply. As with any government job, the hoops to jump through and red tape far exceed any other nursing job you have ever applied for.

SO true! But I think that if someone's really serious about getting a job, they'll do it all. Those who throw their hands up halfway through and say "I'm not doing this nonsense" don't get hired. Self-weeding process ;)

I have had one clinical rotation at the VA and I loved it. The staff all said they were very happy with their jobs. It seemed like a great place to work!
