CSULA Fall 2021

Published

Hi all!
I just wanted to create this forum for students who are applying to CSULA Fall 2021 for the BSN Nursing track in case we had questions for each other, wanted to share thoughts, stats and to support each other through this journey.

I was wondering if anyone has applied and knew if CSULA requires verification for volunteer hours in their NursingCAS application portion? Also, will they accept any amount of volunteer hours under 50? I know you can add a document. Thank you!

Anyone know where I can find a list of the clinical sites? Thanks!

They haven’t been determined/set yet and they’ve been changing due to covid, for example we could usually do clinicals at cedar Sinai but not since the pandemic, but there are sites all over LA to choose from. They’ll usually give you a site that’s close to where you live so you don’t have to travel too far.

Where are the sites generally? I heard the sites have been affected due to Covid-19. Do you know what other restrictions there have been? Other sites restricted from? Thank you!

Hi there ! I'm a first year student and I was offered admission into the program. Yes you're correct, they did change the pre-nursing major from 2 years to 1. This means that you will be taking all of your pre-reqs in 2 semesters, as opposed to 4. In addition, you will also take the TEAS and apply to the nursing program in the fall as well.

thank you for clearing that up!! I was also wondering, does anyone have recommendations on where to volunteer to get hours? Is it worth it to get my CNA lisense? Like will it help increase my chances to get accepted?

Does anyone see an option to decline admission? I'd love to open up a spot for someone on the waitlist ASAP but it just says admitted with no option to decline. My to-do list has deadlines on April 15 so maybe my incompletion will open up a spot!

I would email --------------------- to say you're declining your acceptance into PACSON although you were supposed to respond to the email before the 26th so she might have automatically declined you already. As for the portal I would call the admissions office and let them know that you do not wish to attend CSULA so that you have everything cleared up ?

You can do your hours anywhere as long as you’re doing patient care as in interacting with patients, ie. bringing them water, a blanket or doing more hands on stuff like assisting with wound care. Filing paperwork at a hospital/clinic wouldn’t count. Not sure if getting your CNA license would help but it can’t hurt, as long as you have hours working patient care.

Usually it’s Kaiser, cedar Sinai, I know there’s one downtown, one by long beach, one by Burbank, there’s more but I don’t know them all.

You should look up any hospitals near you that are offering volunteer opportunities. Any hospital is fine as long as the duties consist of changing bed sheets, giving water to patients, and stuff like that. This is just my personal opinion: I feel like CNA is not needed if you already do volunteering. In this forum, people have said they've gotten in with just volunteer hours. I would say aiming for 200+ hours is pretty good, and try to get the highest GPA and TEAS scores. Maybe it's okay to consider becoming a CNA since a lot of hospitals are not allowing volunteers, but remember that you're going to have to find a job and work for the healthcare hours. IDK if working while being a full-time pre-nursing student would be easy, especially since you need to aim for a good GPA while the classes are condensed to just one year now. If you think that you can work as a CNA while doing school, then I would say go for it. This is just my opinion from what I'm seeing in this application pool, people with just 100 hours got accepted along with their other stats. But I guess things can change by the time you apply, so definitely get more opinions ?

wow wow that is great advice!! Thank you;) if getting a CNA requires too much my first year, then I’ll stick to volunteering! I also have a question about taking AP classes in high school. For the pre nursing students at CSULA did passing any of the AP tests count for credit for any specific classes that were required to take? For example right now I’m taking AP Environmental Science, AP stats, AP literature, AP Gov/ AP Econ, and I’ve already taken AP language and AP US history. I’ve looked at the Nursing BSN program roadmap pdf with all the classes and most of my current AP’s aren’t in the program roadmap. Would this mean taking all these AP tests wouldn’t really matter since they aren’t classes listed on the class roadmap for nursing?

If you pass the AP exams with a 3 or higher you’re good. This is the current rule, that applies to current freshman and previous years but they wanted to change that this year to 3=C grade, 4=B grade and 5=A grade but left it as the current 3 and above means you pass, so it might change again for next year. If they change it to 3=C etc, you’d need to have a 4 or 5 for it to count otherwise you need to take the equivalent course for it since you cannot get a C or you’re out of the program automatically. AP Stats will cover your math class here, either language or literature will cover one of your English courses, not sure if history will be counted due to that when you take history here it usually covers an (re) or a (d) requirement so you might have to take another course to fulfil that part. Definitely let your advisor know about the AP courses you’ve passed when you meet with them over zoom after your orientation and they’ll be able to tell you what AP classes count for what.

Sounds good, thanks again!! I’ll definitely keep that in mind when orientation comes around. Would you happen to know if Econ would count as well? Because I’m looking at the 1st year for Fall’s prerequisites on the Nursing roadmap PDF and it says “MATH/ECON 1090*”.
