CSUDH Entry MEPN Program - Fall 2010 Applicants

Published

i've been following a few threads and i love the excitement and anticipation of those waiting for acceptance letters/phone calls to a particular program and the camaraderie that it creates. i would love to get a thread going to show support and updates for those of us who have/are applying to cal state dominguez hills mepn program for fall 2010. i submitted my portfolio and application on november 30th. i was told that i should expect an interview in january. this is the only program i'm applying to. i know some may say that isn't smart, but i've done alot of research and it is the best/only one that meets all of my needs: prereqs, location, program duration, nclex pass rate and cost. being 30 and already having an expensive master's from usc in a field that i have decided to walk away from in order to follow my heart, i know that this program is the one for me. so i'm stepping out on faith and claiming my spot in the fall 2010 cohort. in my workshop, they said that they only expect to accept 35-40 students for fall. would love for others to share their experience with applying to this program and hopefully many of us will start this journey together are csudh in the fall! good luck to everyone!

Hi Everyone,

I sent out an e-mail to some of my group members from my Patho class so hopefully we can get some more people on the thread. It has been such a great outlet for me this past month.

Also, we just finished our Patho class so maybe we can give you guys some insight on the class. I was really stressed out about it at first. When you first receive the textbook it is quite intimidating...it's huge!

There are 13 topic quizzes each worth four percent of your grade. You can take the quiz multiple times until you get the full credit and its a great way to learn the material. There were topics where I took the quiz at least 10 times. There is a group paper that takes some coordination between team members but ultimately if everyone does their part you will get a good grade. The midterm and the final are the most nerve racking because you cannot take it multiple times...obviously, so you need to really know your Patho to get a good grade. The instructor gives you an opportunity for extra credit throughout the term so take advantage of those because they could mean the difference between a B and an A. Let me know if I can provide any more insight.

Thanks, Carolyn, that is great info to know! Glad to hear the instructor gives you opportunities to improve your scores! I was so hoping to have a break this summer before school starts in August, but oh well - at least patho doesn't seem too, too bad! Please keep us posted once you hear something! I'm sure everything will be fine! ;-)

Hello :)

I am Teodora and I would like to ask what other topics you got for the 'writing sample" I am planning to applay as an international student and I would like to work on my writing sample in advanse because my English grammer and spelling need some work. Please ,do you remember the other topics of the essay. Thanks .

Hi Teodora,

As Kim stated, the writing sample is REALLY basic, and believe me, it will not be the determining factor. And if English is your second language, I'm sure this will be taken into consideration. Although, it seems like you're fine based on what you've written in your posts. It's a tad bit unethical for you to ask, and for us to provide you, with the topics ahead of time. None of us knew this information (I didn't even know that there would be a writing sample when I walked into my interview), so at least you know that you will have to write a very brief essay. Just do your best and you should be fine! Good luck!

Mya

Wow, that is really a surprising response. You blatantly ask for questions to an interview and are upset when you are called out for the inappropriateness of it. It is a form of cheating, which I was pretty nice not to say in my initial post.

I am definitely not mean and am going to make an excellent nurse. But I have carried students like you through many pre-req classes and to be honest, it is something I am hoping to avoid in this program. I am hoping that the application process is weeding out people who are not actually qualified or ready for the intensity of the program. And the problem of nurses who are unable to communicate with patients is a very large one and causes a lot more patient unhappiness than nurses who are straightforward and honest in their communication. Obviously this is a sensitive issue for you. I again apologize that you took for "mean" what was meant to be helpful conversation.

Kim I can answer this, but I am gonna stop because I really want to be accepted after you wrote this. I would love for you to carry me during the program. I am almost 250 pounds LOL

NP. And seriously, good luck. I honestly don't mean you any harm and I hope you do well on your interview. As Mya said, it's very basic and you should do fine. If you do end up getting in, I will have 20 months to show you that I'm actually not too bad and I definitely won't be a "mean and rude" nurse. ;) Are you planning on taking patho in the summer, or have you already taken it?

I have just Statistic and I am done .

I have just Statistic and I am done .

Have you applied for the Fall 2010 cohort or is this for next year?

I didn't realize that the SON was still conducting interviews for the 2010 cohort. Is anyone out there that has yet to interview or is scheduled to interview for the 2010 cohort? I know that in previous cycles they were sending out acceptance letters up until June but I would think that they have streamlined the process since we are the 5th cohort but I guess that each application cycles presents their own individual challenges.

how do you know that they are still conducting interview? I was looking at 2009's and it ended quite early. I guess there are just more applicants this year.

I am still waiting on my letter and I was told that I would recieve something by the first week of may.

Do you know if they send out rejection letter or wait till the end?

I wasn't sure if they are still conducting interviews. I actually thought they were done but someone mentioned on the thread that they were still preparing for an interview.

A friend of mine got a rejection letter months ago (March) and didn't get an opportunity to interview with the SON. The letter said that she did not meet the minimum GPA requirement so they probably automatically rejected those applicants that did not meet the minimum requirement. I hope by this point they have weeded down the pool of applicants to candidates that they are seriously considering.

Yesterday I got a letter from CSUDH admission but it was about financial aide. My heart jumped into my throat but it was a false alarm. hahahahaha!

Ha ha, what a tease of a letter! I understand the feeling...

I hope you hear soon!
