i've been following a few threads and i love the excitement and anticipation of those waiting for acceptance letters/phone calls to a particular program and the camaraderie that it creates. i would love to get a thread going to show support and updates for those of us who have/are applying to cal state dominguez hills mepn program for fall 2010. i submitted my portfolio and application on november 30th. i was told that i should expect an interview in january. this is the only program i'm applying to. i know some may say that isn't smart, but i've done alot of research and it is the best/only one that meets all of my needs: prereqs, location, program duration, nclex pass rate and cost. being 30 and already having an expensive master's from usc in a field that i have decided to walk away from in order to follow my heart, i know that this program is the one for me. so i'm stepping out on faith and claiming my spot in the fall 2010 cohort. in my workshop, they said that they only expect to accept 35-40 students for fall. would love for others to share their experience with applying to this program and hopefully many of us will start this journey together are csudh in the fall! good luck to everyone!

HI Mya,
I wanted to apply for next year too but I still need to take pathophysiology. Did u take it at csudh?
Hi. No I haven't taken it yet. Did you attend a workshop? You have to attend the workshop before you apply. Your portfolio and application are due 30 days after the workshop. They let you know every step in the workshop. While pathophysiology is given at other schools, you can only take it at CSUDH is you are applying to the MEPN program. When you're ready to take it, you have to get a special registration code through the school of nursing that is specifically for MEPN applicants. Unfortunately, you have to have completed anatomy, physiology and microbiology before you can take the patho class. I won't have all of mine completed until next semester, so I will have to take it in Summer 2010. But the good thing is they let you still apply, even if patho is outstanding, but you have to complete it during the summer before the program. Hope this helps.
Thanks Mya,
I am going on january 14 for the workshop. I have everything except patho and research sturdies. Both will cost me around 1300 at csudh, I was wondering if anywhere else will be cheaper. So frustrating....
I hear ya! It is a pretty penny, especially when there are several community colleges in california who offer the course online (santa barbara cc, yuba cc, etc.) at $26 a unit, but it's their policy so there's no way around it unfortunately. However, I think you may be able to take the research class at a cc, so hopefully that will save you some money. The workshop is great and very informative. They have a very supportive and caring team heading the program, which really sealed the deal for me. I think I have a good chance, I just have to do well in my interview and work my butt off in physiology (winter quarter UCLA extension) and microbiology (spring quarter UCLA extension), and put the rest in God's hands! Good luck and keep me posted!

Hi Mya,
I will be done with my Bachelors in Health Science as well as 3 of the MEPN pre-req's in Spring 2011. I have completed the sciences however, except for Patho. I wanted to attend the workshop febuary 2010 but i read ur earlier post and u mentioned that u need to submit your application 30 days after the workshop date you attended. Since i won't be completely done till 2011, will i still need to submit an application 30 days after the workshop? And how many days after you submitted your application, did they call for an interview? and when do you start taking your nursing classes for the program?
Sorry, i know i have alot of questions. The MEPN program has really caught my attention and i tried asking the school but they kept responding, "attend the workshop" =P
Thanks for your help!
Hi LBgirl!
If you are planning to apply for Fall 2011, you may want to wait to attend a workshop that is scheduled for the end of the year (2010). The reason I recommend that is because you have to pay $50 and submit transcripts from all of your schools, so they can do an evaluation of what's outstanding. Now you can do all of that if you just want to attend the session to learn more, but you will have to attend another session before you apply, in which your portfolio is due 30 days after the workshop. So, in my opinion, it would be a waste of time and money to attend the January one, when you will have to attend another one regardless.
Secondly, they haven't called for my interview. When I submitted my portfolio on Nov. 30, I was told that they would be calling this group of applicants in January for interviews, since December is a dead month due to finals and holidays. So hopefully I will get a call in the next week or so. And if I get into the program, I will start Fall 2010 - every cohort starts together, take the exact same classes together, so you will go through the entire program and every class with the same 30-36 students. The program only begins in the fall of each year, there is no spring admissions. Also, you cannot defer your acceptance to start in the spring or the next fall year, if for some reason you are not able to start the fall for which you were admitted - you have to reapply.
And honestly, you are not going to get a lot of questions answered via email or the phone, believe me, I tried. They say attend the workshop because that is where ALL, and I do mean ALL, of your questions are answered, and you walk away well informed and knowing if you want to apply to the program or not. My workshop lasted almost 4 hours.
Hope this helps and good luck with your last year of school!

Hi all,
I have also applied for the MEPN program for Fall 2010 - submitted my portfolio in September...was told I would interview in October, but it didn't happen until December...so don't get discouraged if it takes a while to schedule the interview!
Like you, Mya, I am in my 30's and leaving my career to following my heart (though my master's degree was probably a little cheaper than SC's ;o)
Regarding Pathophysiology, I was assured that the only community college that was transferable is SBCC because it is the only upper division course offered at a CC. Much cheaper and pretty mellow...all online. I took it last semester, so they better accept it! If you are interested in it, it is housed in the Health Information Technologies (HIT) department.
That was my last course, so all I can do at this point is wait...which is difficult. Ahhh!!!
Hopefully it works out for all of us!
Thanks for ur help Mya!!
i hope u get a call for an interview soon!
I guess i will have to attend the workshop later on this year.
After completion of the MSN program, what will students be working as at the hospital or clinic? Im not sure what a clinical nurse leader's job is.
Ok, so I don't know who's following this thread or if there are even anymore CSUDH fall 2010 applicants, but I just got a call for my interview. I interview on Monday!:dncgbby:
