i've been following a few threads and i love the excitement and anticipation of those waiting for acceptance letters/phone calls to a particular program and the camaraderie that it creates. i would love to get a thread going to show support and updates for those of us who have/are applying to cal state dominguez hills mepn program for fall 2010. i submitted my portfolio and application on november 30th. i was told that i should expect an interview in january. this is the only program i'm applying to. i know some may say that isn't smart, but i've done alot of research and it is the best/only one that meets all of my needs: prereqs, location, program duration, nclex pass rate and cost. being 30 and already having an expensive master's from usc in a field that i have decided to walk away from in order to follow my heart, i know that this program is the one for me. so i'm stepping out on faith and claiming my spot in the fall 2010 cohort. in my workshop, they said that they only expect to accept 35-40 students for fall. would love for others to share their experience with applying to this program and hopefully many of us will start this journey together are csudh in the fall! good luck to everyone!

Congratulations Rachele! It must be such a relief to finally get accepted after months of waiting and years of preparation. I am still keeping my fingers crossed and hope to hear soon!
Hi Killar,
I interviewed two weeks ago and turned in my portfolio in November so there are definitely people out there that have not gotten a response from the school yet. I don't know of anyone who is still interviewing though. Good luck to you!!!
I have my Pathophysiology final tonight and it's been really difficult focusing cause all I can think about is getting a response. Oh my...
Hello guys :).
I am new and I am happy I found you here.I have major problem. Can somebody tell me what is a "writing sample" please. English is my second language and I am planning to apply as an INTERNATIONAL student.Do I have to write an essay during the interview? What you have to write about? I am not an excellent speller and my grammar is well ..not so perfect .Please I need help with the topic of the writing samples.Someone mention that they did offer you 2 topics.Who remembers exactly the topics so I can practice my English writing skills. you can email me at
Hi Teodora,
I don't remember what the other two questions were but I do remember the question that I wrote about. Describe your short term and long term professional and academic goals. I remember the other two being pretty straight forward also and similar to the questions that we answered in our portfolio.
Quick question: I just finished my Patho class through CSUDH extension. Does anyone know if I need to send a transcript to the School of Nursing or do they have access to those records since it is the same university? I was told that I would hear back this week so they probably have already made decisions but if this somehow helps my chances I want to be sure they know I did well in the course. Thanks!

I'm not sure as I will be taking the class this summer. However, I'm quite sure that they have access, but you may want to shoot ----- a quick email letting him know that you have finished the class and how would he like for you to submit the grade. I'm sure that with all he has going on, it's real easy to forget which applicants/candidates are taking what, and more than likely, you will have to be the one to inform him that the class is complete.
Hi Mya,
It's probably better to buy textbooks new, as some of them come with an evolve resource registration that I highly recommend. The evolve website breaks down the chapters and highlights the key points. It is a really great resource. I think if you buy this resource separate from the textbook it is about $60. I saw some new textbooks online for about that price so that sounds like a good deal.
I also interviewed with ----- and he was really easy to talk to. (He likes to talk so it will probably take you twice as long to interview as they tell you.) He will ask you questions from a script - pretty much the same things you address in the portfolio, as well as the always tough, "who are you?" lol. Then you will have a pretty straightforward writing sample. I believe you have two topics to choose from - I can't remember what I wrote about, but I think it was something like "why I want to be a nurse". Good luck and let us know what happens!
Hello :)
I am Teodora and I would like to ask what other topics you got for the 'writing sample" I am planning to applay as an international student and I would like to work on my writing sample in advanse because my English grammer and spelling need some work. Please ,do you remember the other topics of the essay. Thanks .
Teodora, I certainly do not mean to be rude, but throughout this thread we have given a lot of information that will help you through the interview process - certainly more than any of us had going into the interview and we did just fine. The writing sample is very basic. If you are unable to sit and complete a basic writing sample without preparing for it ahead of time, you may want to reconsider this particular program of study. All nursing programs are intense. This is a masters-level program, which will make it even more intense and fast paced. You will not be doing yourself, your future patients or the other students in the program any favors by entering the program if your English is not very solid. Again, I am not trying to be mean, but it is inappropriate for you to ask for specific questions to the interview so that you can prepare ahead of time.

Congrats, rachele818! Look forward to "talking" to you shortly...
Killar, they seem to be somewhat...disorganized...so I wouldn't read too much into the fact that you haven't heard anything yet. I am sure you will hear soon!
