Hi everyone!
I haven't seen any postings from CSUF EL-MSN Fall 2010 applicants! Are there any of you out there? I received my complete checklist about two weeks ago and was curious if anyone else has heard anything from the school?? Good luck to all of you!!!
Exactly - since our goal is CRNA we shouldn't even bother with an NP cert. I mean we'll all be making the same amount of money starting and by the time most NPs are hired from staff nursing (2-5 years) we'll probably be on our way in the CRNA program. I'm leaning towards Fullerton also because it seems like it would be a more laidback program - that's not a bad thing, I just don't want to cram everyday like I did for my bio degree. And the cost issue - we'll prob save a big chunk by going CSUF - I'm commuting and this would cut my gas bill in half.
I agree about the financial aid - CSU Fullerton will likely offer better aid package, and I hear that Fullerton has better quality of instruction....I wonder if the Nursing program shares the same clinical sites with the CRNA program, if so there's a chance to network and make some good impressions. In any case you can prob specialize in fullerton (nurse midwife) and i think it's easier to gain employment as a new nurse midwife than a new grad NP.I still haven't heard anything from LB so i think it's Fullerton for me.
Ive always heard you needed a BSN for CRNA, but I never understood how that relates to the entry level MSN programs. If it true that an MSN is accepted instead, then that makes more sense.
I agree with all you guys on here that if you want to enter the CRNA field...Fullerton is the place you should be! I think you will benefit by going there for the entry level masters, you will get to know the faculty and network like you guys said...it will be a way more fulfilling experience by going to the school that has the future program you want.
Yeah the Kaiser school accepts it for their program (Kaiser Permanente - School of Anesthesia) - CSUF grad program requires a BSN to apply to the nursing department when you apply to the CRNA program. I seriously doubt that they would be that cold hearted towards their own EL-MSN students . Yeah I'm going to go to Fullerton just for CRNA - even though Long Beach is more prestigious generally I feel like I might regret having to suffer so much for a CNS or NP certification when CRNA is my goal. Honestly the only reason I wanted to goo to LongBeach was because I got in - I know several people who were rejected from LB and I was surprised I got in despite my difficulties with their faculty (the front desk people who acted condescendingly towards me for turning in everything last minute) and lack of preparation for the TEAS. It was a hard decision but I agree that it will be more fulfilling for me personally as it will give me a chance to network as you say and possibly even begin shadowing CRNA's (or at least CRNA students) early. Hope you enjoy Long Beach - we'll probably have the same rotation sites one day so maybe we can compare experiences!

Hey, sorry I am not an applicant for the msn program at Csuf. I am in the first cohort of the EL-BSN program at Csuf. I was trying to find out how to get Fullertons email to work on my iPhone when I stumbled on this forum. I have no clue why I read the whole thing haha. But it brought me back memories of the anxiety and fear of applying. I saw that gashin says he/she doesn't want to cram for the RN. I hate to break it to you.. But we have had 2 msn students drop down to bsn because the msn program is so fast paced. EL-MSN students do all of their RN training in a year and a half...which is twice as fast as we get through the same RN curriculum. You then spend a year and a half working solely on the masters portion..and don't spend an hour reviewing your RN (or so I've been told) so it is has made many of the msn students nervous because they feel they are losing their skills (except for the few who are working as RNs in their last 18 months. I hope that helps a little bit with your decision. You all sound like you have awesome applications!!! Don't get down on yourself. Improve for next year. It's a sucky time to pursue nursing right now for everyone: for applicants, nursing students who want a job in a hospital, as well as new grads who are going up against 700 other applicants for 4 spots. Keep your chin up. This all will get better! (or that's what I keep telling myself when I hope and pray I will be hired next year once i graduate!!) good luck everyone!!
Thanks for the goodluck wishes gashin! I know that Long Beach is where I want to go. But for everyone else...I just got an acceptance from Fullerton today!! I was on the waitlist but not anymore I just got the email at 3:45pm Tuesday. They are giving me until May 7th to email them back to accept before they ask another person on the alternate list. Looks like they are cycling through everybody...I will send them an email back to decline probably tomorrow morning, so somebody else is next :) See you all in future clinicals and hospitals in the area.
Ok here it is...hope it helps. My letters and interview felt good to me. Its probably my borderline undergrad GPA that put me just below their cutoff. Goodluck everyone...I'm sure these numbers will come in handy to next years applicants, to see who made it to the top of the alternate list, but ultimately made it in.
-Last 60 semester unit GPA= 3.57 (14 points)- possibly 12 points though, its borderline from 3.54 to 3.57
-Prereq GPA= 4.0 (20 points)
-Volunteer= (5 points)
-Residency= (10 points) CA+ Riverside
-Letters ? I know they were really good
-Interview ? Felt I very confidently articulated why I want to go into nursing and felt I showed I was knowledgeable about the many degrees, career paths, and job areas related to nursing. I also talked about how my mom is a nurse.
I was on the alternate list. I just got an email from them on Tues April 27, 2010 at 3:10 pm. I am so excited. I just bought MCAT books and was shooting for MD or DO schools next year. I guess that I'll be a nurse instead and I'll be returning the MCAT books. I just emailed them to confirm a spot for fall 2010.
Here are my stats:
Major: Economics
GPA based on last 60 units: 3.67
Hosptial experience: NONE
Health Care work experience: NONE
Attended CSUF for Bachelor of Arts: 15 points automatically given
Recommendation Letters: Got high recommendations
* During my interview all I talked about was my military experience and deployment to iraq. This helped a lot.
Good luck to those on the alternate list.
The next hard part is getting into the CRNA program and I need a 3.8 GPA in nursing school to be competitive.
Hey future murse, congrats! I was preparing for MCAT's a year ago too, its funny how things change. I am so happy for it too. Not that I don't think going to med school is awesome, but I'm so glad I found my thing with nursing you know. I don't think you will regret it...opportunities happen for a reason!
