Crisis travel assignments for Covid-19?

Nurses COVID

Updated:   Published

Hey all, hope you are all staying safe during this insanity. I was wondering if anybody has started to see crisis/high rate jobs posted yet? If so, post the specialty and company.

I wholeheartedly disagree. The nurses who are taking these assignments had nothing to do/didn't cause the pandemic so they can't be to blame. Everyone is working for a paycheck, period, and if they are willing to possibly increase their risk because of the increased compensation then more power to them.

The people who should be ashamed of themselves, if anyone, are the hospital administrators and executives. If MY hospital would pay me to pick up extra shifts at the rate they some of these travel assignments are being paid, I would be picking up extra everyday.

We can agree to disagree....I didn't become a nurse to get rich....If I wanted to get rich, I would have continued to be a bartender....same job...less germs....no poop....simple stuff...but whatever works ....

....bottom line....my personal opinion.....if you're a nurse and you're looking to get rich at the expense of the sickness and deaths of strangers, and colleagues, then the problem is bigger than COVID-19....you should be ashamed of yourselves....but a true view of what being a nurse has evolved into....smfh....

Why should I be ashamed for desiring to get ahead financially? I’m trying to retire early and get out of this rat race. I don’t want to be working as a nurse in my 60s. The income potential of these crisis assignments is appealing. I have no shame in admitting that or pursuing it.

Maybe shame on you for trying to govern other people’s finances and motives?

Well (of course) you are entitled to your opinion but I am not sure that too many would agree with you. Here are the reasons I do not: 1) nurses work for a living just like everyone else, other professions receive hazard pay so why shouldn't we, 2) admin has been throwing nurses under the bus for years while sitting in their offices telling us what a horrible job we are doing while simultaneously cutting staff and resources in order to line their pockets with large salaries and bonus', so why is it wrong to reap a little more now while you can, 3) it truly is hazard pay for a very hazardous job which could endanger your life and your friends/family's, 4) you are not getting rich at others expense, these people need help and you will be helping, and you most certainly will not get rich as (hopefully) this is a temporary situation. If I was working I would have zero qualms about accepting one of these positions if I though overall it was right for my personal situation.

This is simply my opinion....I wouldn't work a nurse strike either....many do....it's not my business....just offering my opinion....as I said, agree to disagree....if you're okay with it, then that's fine for you....we are all different...

Is it possible to negotiate a contract where you can work on your off days if you already have a FT job and want to keep said job? I have a state job in Texas, vesting into the state pension system, and have no desire to give that up at all. Once Coronavirus shows up in my neighborhood I know that demand for qualified RNs will skyrocket (I used to work ICU several years ago). But I would only do it if they could agree to work on the days I was off on my current job.

Absolutely....I'm in a position where I put money last....not because I'm rich, my checking account has 10$ in it, but because I refuse to put money first....I don't care about having "stuff"....and although it may sound crazy, if I can't pay cash, I don't buy it....I don't have credit cards, a mortgage or a 500$/month car payment...I drive a 2007 Focus....because I want to....because I want the freedom of NOT being strapped into working to make a certain amount of money just to survive....like I said, no judgement, just my choice....I do., however, splurge on a good steak once in a while...?

Sounds like registry work rather than travel would be right for you. You set the hours you are available. I would be very cautious abuot working in multiple facilities as the spread in Washington was from nurses working more than one job.

Agreed....however.....there's a difference between getting paid a reasonable salary for a specific skill set that you have to take time and money and education to acquire and getting paid a ridiculous amount of money to perform the same job in a time of worldwide crisis....we're nurses....there used to be pride in saying that....people's true agendas usually surface when the *** hits the fan....that's kinda sad, but it is what it is....maybe the garbage men/women should double their salaries too.......this world would be a mess without them as well....just a thought....

There is no reason that I can see that a nurse can't make a decent living and still care for their patients.

Seriously? We should be so grateful for the nurses that are taking these risks. They deserve that money regardless of what their reasons are.

Ah, that explains all of the bartenders who have country club memberships and drive exotic sports cars.

I have a lot to say to you, but you're not worth the time. Nurses who go to disaster zones and work ungodly hours in horrific conditions deserve to be paid accordingly. Case closed.
