COVID-19: Stimulus Checks for Teachers?

Perhaps I'm missing something but I just read this on some news site but similar articles are all over the news:

Quote

"Some state governments and local school boards have made the decision to send stimulus money to teachers as a thank you for the efforts they made during the COVID-19 pandemic. Many teachers risked exposure by offering in-person instruction, while many others had to scramble to transition to online coursework during an unprecedented global public health crisis".

And this is the email I just sent to Governor Abbott and Senator Ted Cruz:

Quote

I am horrified the State of Texas is sending $1000 stimulus checks to teachers.  For what?  They sat in the safety and security of their homes most of the past school year, teaching from computers.  Where is the extra stimulus for the nurses and other healthcare providers who literally put their lives on the line each and every day as they cared for people in hospitals, in their homes.  Not only were they at severe and much greater risk than teachers -  they also risked the lives of their family members each time they completed a shift and walked through their front door.  Their spouses, children, elderly relatives..

Also, speaking of elderly, where is THEIR stimulus check.  Are you aware housing (where they are going to live) is the greatest concern of seniors?  How are they going to buy groceries?  Pay for life-saving medications?

And yes?  I am a retired senior nurse.  I'm OK.  I can afford my rent, my food; however, I worked with low income seniors for the past 3-4 years.  Many are homeless.

So explain to me why hundreds of thousands of dollars are going to teachers while you leave out those that saved the lives of those teachers?  And many seniors that made this country what it is?

This plan is abhorrent.  I'm ashamed of my Texas government.

What am I missing here?  I didn't even have room to talk about the nightmare of working in those many layers of PPE, having difficulty breathing through the masks, sweating from all the layers of protective gowns/caps...so many things...for 12-14+ hours...helpless while people are dying before your eyes...not having a family member with them.  And what about all the HCP's that had to go to work (including unit sec, CNA's, ancillary people) and leave their kids at home to try to get computer educated???

OK...this is the reason I normally do NOT listen to the news - not good for an old persons B/P.  I'm livid for my peers.

When the parents are working out of the home, where do the children go to be safe from covid and crazies and who home schools them?

There are many homeschool groups where I live, it's not just one area, there are many. They are in the different small towns. One small town has there's, the other small town has their own. You just make arrangements. Calling in sick is common around here, and no big deal if you have children, if you can't make it to work, it's understandable and the person is at home and probably couldn't make it. No one is criminalized for missing work because they have children.

Bold mine.

Do you believe that your experience is representative of the general experience of the working poor?

No, but it's healthcare and it has a lot to do with where you live. It's accepted around my town but if it was the big city it would be different. Small towns  where I live aren't rich. Roads are not maintained, many dirt roads, abandoned houses, stop lights are just hanging at stops, no fancy poles.

I bet your local public schools aren't very well funded then, if your community is poor and rural.  The local teachers probably don't make much money.

What does that matter if it's poor and rural? I don't even think like that. I love where I live. School buses still pick up children even if they live out on a farm. I'd rather live at a friendly place than a cold, unfriendly city.

The thread is about additional stimulus for educators.  Educators in poor rural districts with poor funding could likely use a stimulus.  That's why it matters.  The thread isn't about you and your life style.

As most people know, children are snot-laden vectors of nasty diseases. No one can superspread like a group of kids, NO ONE.  Not to mention having to teach 30 of them at once, it is a daily health hazard.

Now, with people unwilling to vaccinate themselves or their older children, teachers have to deal with this mess?  Um, no.

Give them the money. You people know your kids and you know it's right. 1K is a pittance but at least it's a start.

Be nice, suggest more.

So why are we requiring them to go into the workplace with a bunch of unvaccinated humans in the middle of a pandemic if they aren't "front line workers"?

People are fighting over whether or not the unvaccinated humans in the same physical space with the teaching staff even need to wear face masks, can you believe it? Some want to ban masks in schools and threaten funding should teachers balk at working in that environment.  Do you suppose all school staff are young?

I think both the Texas and Florida governors have banned masks in classrooms so maybe this is a bribe to get the teachers to come back to class?

Wouldn't want to live in a hot "redneck Republican political state" and I say that to the politicians running the show not the people who I see more as a captive audience in these situations!  And I say this as an independent person who views most politicians as corrupt, but I find it disgusting that Republicans have been blocking national healthcare and spent all their time trying to dismantle Obamacare which while not great, is better than no healthcare.  Republicans are the roadblocks to national healthcare, expanded medicare for 55 or 60, to price controls on pharmaceuticals and even just negotiating drug prices on medicare!  We are the only wealthy country that does not provide national healthcare, while even many poorer countries manage to do so!

I do think nurses deserved hazard pay, although I would expect the hospitals to provide it, especially since many got government funding.  My crappy healthcare system got over a billion dollars, but didn't give it to the workers.  Instead they had to use it to hire travelers at crisis pay when they lost most of the staff to competitors that paid them better and provided hazard pay!

My sister works in a clinic system (similar to Mayo Clinic system) that received a ton of money in the HERO bill. When they asked if they'd get any hero pay, they were told, "your hero pay is you still have a job".

Florida and Texas governors have NOT banned masks.  Students have the choice to wear a mask.

I am glad Republicans have been fighting socialized healthcare.  We all know how inefficient the VA and Medicare is.  Why would you want that on a national scale?  Healthcare is a privilege and it’s not a right.  We need to repeal EMTALA that way emergency rooms can turn away those who can’t pay for services.  If this happens there will be a trickle down effect in savings to all the paying customers.  When a person has a $20,000 ER bill and possible admission the lost income is passed onto other peoples bills.

I can’t count the number of times I have treated Canadians even though they have a “superior” healthcare system. Guess they are tired of waiting 2 years for a hip replacement.

As for Pharmaceuticals the vast majority of drugs are very cheap.  If you don’t agree with the prices you are free to start your own pharmaceutical company.  The level of entitlement that many people have in regards to healthcare and being okay with outright stealing from others shows the degradation of mortality and ethics in America.

I am glad Republicans have been fighting socialized healthcare.  Blah blah blah, blah blah blah talking points. Blah blah blah blah blah propaganda! If blah blah blah blah blah, blah blah blah.

I think blah blah blah. And then blah blah blah with blah and blah nonsense.
