Covid and Hospitals: How are things now?

Updated:   Published

Just curious. Here in DFW I see hospitalizations are rising to 14%. How are things in the hospitals? Are things relatively normal? No more furloughs?

Please share. I am not in acute care, but I am of course very interested in the effects on acute care staff.

I'm pretty certain that the facility gets to decide who stays in the designated rooms based upon criteria that is communicated to the residents.  Most skilled nursing facilities are privately owned by either for profit or not-for-profit entities.  The AMA and ANA just released a joint statement that urges all health care workers to be vaccinated.

It stands to reason that going forward, people may find that they might have difficulty finding a skilled nursing or rehab facility that will accommodate unvaccinated residents. The facilities may view that as unacceptable risk.

I am pretty sure they would or will see that as unreasonable risk.

Would love some updates. I know that our positivity rate here is up to 20% now and hospitalized Covid patients 600+.  I tjhink that is about ? 12% of all hospitalized patients.

712 state wide admitted

205 in ICU

140 on vents

Positivity 4.4%

In my hospital system we have 19 confirmed, 37 PUIs.

10 in the ICU. 10 on vents.

All new admissions to ICU are unvaccinated (3 of the patients are trached long-termers waiting for transplant)

I truly have no idea what way this is going to go.

But don't you think we actually do have a way this thing is gonna go? I mean, you could pretty accurately track the gradual increase in cases with the slowdown of the vaccinations. One has something to do with the other in terms of mass public health. All of which is to say, if we can really ramp up vaccinations and basic prudent behavior, we will have a very good idea which way this is going to go.

How it's going to go is entirely dependent on how may people get their vaccines and in what time frame. It is a variable that we cannot estimate so there is no way for us to predict how big this surge will be, how long it will last and how many more are in our future.

Yes, it's dependent on vaccination, which is my point. And I think we can tell some things about Delta, based on how it's passed through other countries.  I don't think it's unforeseen that with the uptick in cases, we are seeing a concomitant uptick in vaccinations. No, we can't predict with 100% certainty. Never could, never will be able to.

I let a graph about my organizations covid hospitalizations speak.  The top is total number, the bottom line is intubated.   To me it's stunning and frightening how quickly it's escalated and keeps getting worse day by day.  2020 numbers weren't this high.

You are living in a social experiment conducted by political conservatives.  So am I.  Unfortunately, when our small local hospital exhausts it's resources the next bigger hospital is across the tallest mountain range on the continent, a 6 hour drive at minimum.

Health professionals are tired...sad...angry.  they need a break.  Instead, they are going to experience something much darker.

Thank you for those updates. If only we could see the future.

School starts here in 2 weeks so that will be interesting....

Central NJ. Ramping up. Don’t have actual numbers for my facility but it’s back. My anecdotal observations are the symptomatic ones are unvaccinated while the asymptomatic ones are vaccinated & test + when swabbed for admission.

Yep. I bet you are correct.  Still, the folks at increased risk for covid can get ill enough to require hospitalization even when vaccinated...they can get ill but they are unlikely to get deathly ill.

According to darthmouthatlas, my area in southern Oregon is now #1 for new daily cases. Hospital went from having less than 10 covid to having 180 covid pts, 51 in critical care. Top two floors of the hospital are covid and our ICU and IMCU are full covid hot zones.

however, in the ER, it’s been pretty chill. Most people are scared to come to the hospital, so our volume of visitors has dropped substantially this last week.

Yesterday, though, some group called like, “maskless women of Oregon society” or something like that held a protest outside the hospital and several hundred people, if not a thousand showed up. Figure this with the Labor Day weekend will blow up our cases further. We’re gonna be hurting for staff, too, because 40% of the hospital is unvaxxed and Kate brown put out a mandate to get poked or get a new job and a lot of people are about to jump ship.
