very complicated situation... please advice on this

I will keep it short. I have agreed with my local hospital to work as a GN at a med-surg/telemetry unit after graduation on May. Today, however, I got a reply from big hospital in another city for ER residency.

ER has been my first pick, and the local hospital I agreed to work for, we didn't sign contract or anything; pretty much talk to the unit manager, recruiter, and HR person about salary/benefits and agreed to work for them.

My question is, if I do land the big ER job in another city, what is my professional action in this situation? Do I need to inform the unit manager or HR person now that I have interview on the 26th at big hospital ER or should I tell them that after I get the position at this big hospital ER? Thank you for your time.

You tell them AFTER you get the position at the big hospital ER.

Agreed with PP. Don't mention it until you've officially accepted a job offer from the ER.

thanks everyone for your swift answers! it seems that you all think it's better to wait until I secure the ER position, and that is what I will do, even though I feel kind of bad for my unit manager and HR for doing this; but then again, all the nurses told me "you have the degree they want, and you got to look for what is best for you and be selfish".

Never burn bridges. The big ER position may want you to have M/S tele experience prior to coming to work for them. You never know, so until you do I wouldn't say anything. And as an aside, perhaps per diem in the Med Surg/tele can only help you. That way if your residency shouldn't work out, you would not be without a job, and burnt your bride at your local hospital.

thanks jadelpn, a lot of my collegues at school and other people i talk to recommended me to keep my mouth shut until I am offered the position; kind of in a situation where I do want the ER position badly, but at the same time hate to disappoint my manager, but well, they'll get over it i am sure

wait until you have a offer letter infront of you. It will state position title, salary, start date and space for 2 signatures yours and a high level hiring person to sign. anything less than this you do not have a job

really? the local hospital job I got went like this; the manager, recruiter talked, then led me to HR lady and we talked about salary and benefits, GN orientation. No paper signed, nothing.

Anyways, like you said, if they don't offer me the job right there and then at the interview, I'm just going to resign my apartment contract where I live and just work for the local hospital; we graduate may 10th and there's really no time to hit around the bush especially when the interview is on 4/26 and apt lease should be renewed by 4/30.

I'm really happy for you! Though I'll give you my best advice here: take the med/surg tele job. ED is incredibly difficult and in a lot of ways like ICU work at times. You will definitely need ACLS and experience to be successful, IMHO :) I am so grateful that I decided against a MICU and instead an ICU step down environment for my first job.

thank you very much MissM! I did hear couple of nurses tell me to get simpler floor position before plunging into intense ICU or ER b/c that will burn me out; either ways, I am happy how things turn out.

Seriously, I've gone that far in interviews/discussions with facilities just to have it fail to pan out. They can tell you whatever they like and promise you the moon, the stars and a six-pack of Coke, but until you get that official offer, you have nothing.
