Hello, I myself am not a nurse, do not have any knowledge of nursing, nor do I even have an interest of it in the future. However, I recently have met someone who is becoming very special to me and I'd like to get her a very special gift for the holidays. She will finally be starting her nursing schooling next year and has a very specific plan to travel across the world and help out poor areas. I would appreciate suggestions on what you yourselves as nurses, would have appreciated greatly as an ambitious person getting into nursing. If it helps, she's very ambitious, doesn't particularly care for cute things. Really I would like to get her something that would really make her happy and help her on her start to nursing.
Also, I'm pretty broke, which is why i'm starting this search so early. Just so I have time to raise some cash for it. If its worth it, Id be willing to try and get the money for just about anything (although Id highly prefer a reasonably priced idea). And I must definitely emphasize the point that I am dirt broke.
I know this is a pretty dumb question, but I have admiration for all you nurses and know you all are to nice to find it completely dumb. Thanks in advance, I'm really trying to do a good job on this one. I'm very shy and am very poor at expressing how I feel. Im not materialistic nor is she, but if I got her something that shows that I went to pretty hard lengths to find something that was really practical and shows I care, that would definetly help.
Thanks in advance, your all awsome.

How much is too much?
A good stethoscope is invaluable, and I have a blood presure cuff with the gauge attached to the valve. Love it.

hmmmm..... I currently have about 32 dollars. I can make money pretty quick. I do all types of odd jobs. Plus, she'd probably get mad if she learned that I spent a lot of money on her. In fact, she'd probably get mad at first that I got here a gift in the first place. And I didn't think of that one till just now. So preferably the ideal gift for her is valuable and cheap. Even like the quintesential nursing book would be a good idea. I have a pretty good hook up for books, so even if its expensive I may be able to find it cheap.

This book might make a nice gift for the right person and isn't really a fortune. You could write something nice in the jacket, and it might be something she would treasure for many years.

Nurses love watches. I like a good watch that is water resistant (lots of hand washing) and cleans well. Usually something metal and not leather is a good choice. Something that can be cleaned well. And, it definitely needs a second hand.
P.S. I think she is going love whatever you get her because you are trying so hard to get the perfect thing.

Get her a nice leather planner. School will be very demanding of her time, lots of deadlines and observations. Juggeling time is a huge challenge. You could then write in a few love/inspirational notes of course sched in a date or two with her as well.

Make up a little coupon book for her. Put in things like One free massage, a home cooked meal, One free hour of using me as a guinea pig, A homework-free night out, and so on.

Your time, love and support through nursing school will be the most valuable thing you could possibly give her.

I love that idea.
I really like the idea of a blood pressure cuff. I wish I had one at home when I was learning BPs.
I also would like to suggest drug cards... They don't cost too much.. But I hear they are invaluable when doing clinicals and learning drugs. (I start meds this week! AHHHHHHHHHHH!)

The coupon book can be very helpful when she has no time to do something while studying. When you get a little more cash, I agree a good stethescope would be nice.

Get her a very functional 2009 daytimer. Not leather. I wouldn't want to worry about body fluids getting on a nice binder. This should cost less than 10 dollars. Feel free to write a few words on special dates.

a good pair of nursing shoes!! a pair of Danskos will set you back around 100$ at least...but all those hours on her feet she will thank you for a good set of shoes. my feet hurt less and my back is less sore after a 12 hr shift. A good drug reference guide..
Davis's Drug Guide for Nurses (Davis's Drug Guide for Nurses)(10th Edition) (Turtleback). about 30$ used online. She'll definately need this during clinicals and in her career to reference. a well thought out gift for a nurse....Priceless!
